Ehrhoff to PIT

Postby TheHammer24 on Tue Jul 01, 2014 12:09 pm

$4 million - One year

EDIT: Are we keeping this all in one thread? I see benefits in both approaches, but I think many readers drop in -- not to discuss -- but to just see what happened. Looking through a bunch of pages does not facilitate that end. My vote is to allow the discussion in both places.

Precursor to Martin trade perhaps?

I hope not re: Martin trade. Would be a backward step. Not a huge step backwards, but still backwards...

Edit: Each of our big signings should get their own thread probably so they can be discussed individually. It also helps when I post my scouting report of him for people that don't want to skim 4,000 pages of "lol" and "pop"

I'll reserve this spot for thoughts later. My notes on him are not on my work computer, of course.

EDIT: Notes on Ehrhoff...

Christian Ehrhoff (RD/LD) - Offensive-minded defenseman who just goes out and plays the game. He distributes the puck fairly well from the backend; on the power play he is more of a mobile cannon than a quarterback, all told. He finds open areas of the ice well with decent hockey sense and very good skating. His defense isn't always by the book, but it's generally effective. He often leaves his feet (or at least his upright position) to make plays, especially on odd-man rushes against. Isn't really an in-your-face defender with a lot of vinegar, but he finds a way to get the puck out of danger usually. His attention to detail in the defensive zone during a sustained attack leaves a little to be desired sometimes, whether it's puck watching or stick positioning. He just goes out on every shift and plays, there's no other way to describe it.

Career: A #2 two-way defenseman with a penchant for offense

Love it for 1 year. Good signing. 4 mil is the max I would have paid Nisky

Guess when a guy has 10-year contract buyout money rolling in, you can go 1 year with the Pens. #ehrhoff

By all accounts Martin wants to test free agency after the year. Trading him for some pieces would be good asset management IMO

Not so much a quarterback in the traditional sense. But definitely a mobile cannon, I believe the term for that is a howitzer? Or do I have them reversed? Either way. Not as great of a mover, but can handle the puck fine. Definitely more of a shooter. Niskanen replacement.

It would not be. And what accounts are talking about Martin walking a year from now?

I've vilified this idea in the Letang threads from last year. It's not necessarily good asset management if the future value of the assets you get in the years to come are less valuable than Martin would be for one year. If you're only offer was two 3rd round picks for Martin, you'd keep him. So, it depends on the return. Because I think Martin is essential to any chances of winning the Cup this year, and I don't think return for Martin is essential to future years, I would keep Martin.

Also, what accounts?

Wait, Ehrhoff was an A for Buffalo?

Well, chalk up two new assistants being brought into Pittsburgh (Hornqvist the other one). There's some leadership.

Wow, tremendous signing by Rutherford. I wonder which side wanted the 1 year? Allows for space for Pens to keep flexibility and leverage ELC's if possible.

It all depends on the return. If you can get a legit NHLer on an ELC and some futures while freeing up cap space, you do it.

If this is to replace Scuderi, I love it.

If this is to replace Martin, I'm not a big fan unless the return on Martin is amazing.
