More on him later.

He's a guy I had pegged on the 4th line of every roster I drew up this past month. Not a bad guy to pick up for cheap.

Maybe he being in a Pens sweater won't affect that if there's "whipping boy" potential there. :D

Ya know, I looked back at some of my notes and I do speak highly of his eager beaverity. So, if he continues to play with a bee in his bonnet, he's a fine 12th forward I suppose...good skater...I upgrade my "bleh" to a "meh"

I asked this before, but who do you like Mikey? It seems every player that anyone suggests, you knock down and criticize. Any players that the Pens are apparently targeting, or actually sign, you talk them down too.

Just curious who you think they should be targeting? I'm not being snarky either, I'm honestly asking.

Probably people that aren't 1th/12th/13th forwards.

Just adding here that Blake Comeau does in fact PK. He just did it very little with CBJ. You go back 2 years to Calgary, and even further to his Isles years, and he avg. 1:30-2:00 a game on the PK, which means he was typically in the top part of the rotation for PK guys.

I would think the Pens may want him to resume PK duties.

I value hockey intelligence. I'm sick of this team signing dopes. I'm sick of them drafting dopes. Anticipation is the foundation of a professional player. Not every player is going to be, or has to be a genius (I was Tyler Kennedy's biggest fan) but that's the #1 thing I try to determine when scouting...

I think my notes on Ehrhoff speak pretty highly of him.

In terms of this free agency class, my targets might have included the following:

Daniel Winnik - Great board worker. Has embraced the role of being a bottom six player. Has a great step off the boards. Puck protection is +. Underrated skill.

Zach Redmond - If we're adding d-men. This guy is a quiet little diamond in the rough. Played for St. John's in the Calder Cup Final, leg was cut by a skate as a member of Winnipeg. But his skating has been left unaffected. He is a smart puck mover. He quietly goes about his business, he's young and I think he does a good job on the rink. His efficiency is +.

Nikolai Kulemin - This is a quality, thick, two-way winger who can do everything fairly well. When I saw him in Russia as a youth, I raved about his "Kulemin Killing Sprees" - two big hits, a puck swipe, dangle and a snipe. He's been cast as purely a defensive winger and as a result, people think he's garbage (because his numbers are garbage). If we can coach up his offensive confidence again (I think 71 could have a hand), I think you're looking at a good two-way winger who is capable of chipping in plenty of ES goals.

Would consider an energy winger like T.J. Galiardi, would consider one-time specialist Michael Cammalleri, there's guys out there. I just have discriminating taste...we can't just sign every Tom, Dick and Harry and expect to be competitive...signings must have a purpose, lines must have a role...

I think you're supposed to say a player is good or bad. If there are things you don't like about them, turn them into positives because you can't like some things and dislike other things about a player.

He also had the best Corsi of any Blue Jackets forward last season.

Comeau is a guy I was really hoping to see on the Pens 4th line next season, so I'm glad it's happening. Now just to re-sign Spaling at a good price and pick up a 2LW.

The thing about the fourth line is that they don't necessarily have to score, but it's a huge plus if they can at least stay out of their own end. Glass/Vitale/Adams couldn't do it. Now we've got a good possession guy in Comeau, a great faceoff guy in Goc, and (potentially) Downie rounding out the line. You could try to convince me that isn't a great 4th line - but it's not going to happen. Downie is the only one of those three to finish last season with a negative Corsi, and it was a negligible -0.55. They'll amount to an increase in offense, there's little doubt about that, but the big difference is going to be in how much more time they spend out of the defensive zone.

If Comeau can score 10 goals playing the fourth line it would be a great accomplishment on top of the other intangibles he brings.

Don't care about goals. Want a forechecker who can pin a team in their own zone while our top guys are looking for something to build off of during a game. Seems like he might be able to do this, despite my only memories of him being the franz ferdinand if the islanders fiasco and being a total disaster in the playoffs last year.

Comeau is a good pickup. Cheap. Decent pedigree in terms of NHL experience and physicality -with a little offensive ability. Guys like Vitale, Adams and Glass just have zero ability to accomplish anything on the ice.
