That's a shame, because I'm not positive Zatkoff isn't better...never cared for Greiss. Meow, any thoughts?

no idea why we are wasting cap money on a goalie when Zatkoff was signed at near the league minimum.

Because Zatkoff stinks and won't count against the cap once he's sent down?

zatkoff is on a one way deal as well... so we're paying MAF and 1.6 million for backups.

Many teams have an AHL vet signed as a #3 with some NHL experience on a "heavy" two-way deal or a one-way deal for organizational depth. Not an uncommon practice. Red Wings have done this for years...

One-way deal has nothing to do with cap space, though.

very likely Zatkoff might be on his way out, so who knows. Let's just let it play out and see how things go.

are you sure? i know with this last labor deal you can't hid salaries in the minors to help the cap like we could in the past like we did with Satan.

Obviously we are moving Fleury, Greiss to start with Zatkoff as backup.

I've read good things about Greiss...Sounds like a very solid backup with potential for more....

Greiss actually had better numbers than Mike Smith last year. He played less games but he's one of the better back ups in the league.

Anything below 900k can be "burried" anything above 900k the difference sticks.

Zatkoff did play decently well last year, but it was only one year. Couple that with new coaching, new management, they might just be looking for something different from what Zatkoff offers. Maybe in the new defensive schemes he isn't the right goalie to have between the pipes even on a back-up level. They're likely going to move Zatkoff now.

I was never enamored with Zatkoff and thought Shero signed him way too soon. Not familiar with Greiss, hopefully an upgrade. I never felt comfortable when Zatkoff was in net.

Pretty much a wash. If I'm looking at one game, I don't care who starts, Zatkoff or Greiss, but, if Fleury goes down (hurt or sucks) I would feel more comfortable having Greiss step in over Zatkoff. It's a small upgrade in an area that we really didn't need an upgrade at to begin with.
Greiss has a wider variety of experiences...he's played in the Olympics, SHL, DEL, ECHL, AHL, and NHL...so he's got that going for him.

I was not against the Zatkoff signing, but I didn't actually understand why it was done, especially for 2 years. Greiss is a NHL backup. He is a little too good to put in the AHL, but he is not going to challenge to take a NHL starting position. He is smack in the middle.

Absolutely no reason to lose an extra 400k against the cap for this "upgrade"

Agree. Greiss is definitely an upgrade over Zatkoff. The more games he plays the better his numbers are too. So if, God forbid, anything happens to Flower Greiss is great insurance to have.
