Assuming $1M as the cap hit for Despres, this puts the penguins top 9 defenseman from last year at:

2013/14 cap - $20.4M
2014/15 cap - $32.3M

Those are some hefty raises.

Looking at it a different way, our new top 7 has a cap hit of roughly $22M. So for just a small increase in cap we've likely upgraded the "on-the-ice" talent by swapping Ehrhoff for Nisky and Botruzzo/Despres for Orpik.

Great for him.

I don't even know how you get to $2.9/season? I mean, where did negotiations start? Did his agent ask for $4 million and the Flames brought it down? What a truly bizarre deal.

Engelends agent: we would like $1.3 million for three years
Flames GM: (laughing) why not make it $2.9 ( puts phone down and asks is this guy for real)

Assistant writing up contract doesn't know it's a joke and has Derryk sign it :)

Maybe the guy who used to work for Leeds United is now in Calgary.

It's called a team desperate to get to the cap floor. No legit top tier player will want to sign in Calgary, so because of that they sign Engo for $2.9m. Inflated yes, but out of necessity.

Either Engelland had other suitors, or his agent is a world class poker player. The contract tells me that the Flames weren't the only team in on him.

The flames are going to need help getting to the floor for a while. But yeah I don't know if thats what they were thinking when they gave him this contract. I dont think they were thinking at all actually.

I saw prior to July 1st that he had at least 8 teams contact him. So there was a lot of interest in him. I imagine most thought he would be a good cheap, physical 7th D man.

Time to do something about the salary floor. If this is the type of contract guys are getting, the floor is too damn high.

Why does it matter? This was a concession to the players by the owners to keep teams from creating ultra-low team salary caps and screwing players out of $$. Who cares if Engo gets a sweet deal, there is always another player somewhere taking a haircut in salary to play for a contender (ie: Richards and Ehrhoff). It all balances out. I think the system is great!

It is the Orpik and Pouliot deals that have me scratching my head.

The floor should be slightly lower than $51 mil, IMO.

If you look at the Flames cap situation over the next 3 years, you will see that they will be battling the floor each of those years. They do not have many entry level deals to contend with. Also, I am positive the Flames needed to out muscle the Oilers who are desperate for a guys like Engo. Engo is from Edmonton. I am sure there was a small bidding war between both clubs on him.

I don't know much about the Flames, but why don't they spend to the cap? Do they not sell-out and make enough money? Seems to me a team in Canada should fill the house every game. Don't they want to win? Why would a coach want to be there if you can't be competitive? I don't get it. Over pay very average players badly to lose................ :face:

Probably because they're smart enough not to put themselves in the Flyers position. Its not smart to build up your team primarily through free agency.
