Who Would You Choose...and why?

Postby iceolater on Wed Jul 09, 2014 8:23 pm

If you were a free agent and had the opportunity to sign with a current or older team with 2 top superstars, who would you pick and why? The reason I asked this, is that majority of the players of late that are free agents, seem to refer to Sid and Geno as probably the best players in the world. And free agency rolls along, and here we are without a top winger who "Willingly" wants to play here. it appears that having supposely the "2 Best World Players" is not enough to get players signed here.

Only 1 Player came right out this free agency and stated, "This is the best place and who wouldn't want to play here with Sid and Geno?" That was a Defensemen - Erhoff. (Downie was smart too to join the Pens.)

So why didn't Heatley and others take less for a chance to play with the Best? Just makes you wonder of late when free agency rolls around, we usually don't have anyone willing to step up and say, "I am going to the PENS!" (we trade to get out players).

With that being said, You have a chance to play with any 2 superstars current teams or past teams. Who would you pick? ( you can name your own) but why would you pick those 2 players?

Suggestions:
1. Crosby/Malkin
2. Toews/Kane
3. Getzlaf/Perry
4. Kopitar/*Kings team*
5. Gretzky/Messier
6. Lemieux/ Stevens
7. Chara/Bergevin

You're assuming that the Pens were interested in Heatley?

It's a business and players largely follow the flow of capital.

Maybe the Pens didn't offer them contracts? It takes two.

Is this because Heatley was born in Germany?

Heatley had to play in the Campbell Conference because the game is slower and...well...grindy. At 6'4" and barely a leg to stand on, he couldn't have hacked it in the Wales Conference...the game is a little too open. Playing out west gives him the best chance not to be waived and dismissed during the year. Hell, even Minnesota told him to just go away late in the year last year before rescinding that a little while later...

5 years, $7mm to play for the team that has whom I consider the best players in the world.

6 years, $8.5mm to play for a team that isn't that great, but will earn me $9mm more over the length of the contract. I'll take Option B.

With that being said, a lot of hockey players truly want to win the Stanley Cup and place it high on their priority list. Just like some people are very happy in their careers and willing to forego the extra money that comes with other jobs.

Add a salary cap and give me Arnott-Elias-Sykora.
Also, why is it stevens and not Jagr?

I'd take Lemieux/Jagr over Gretzky/Messier.

I'm also a Penguins fan, so yeah...

Morenz/Malone/Vezina.

Why? Because that would mean I would be on the ice before the forward pass was legalized... which would be about the only way I would be fast enough to have any chance at defending NHL players.

I wonder if they'd all admire my composite stick, lightweight skates, and hard-shell pads.

Absolutely. But for the most part only the very players have that luxury. When you're a guy like, say, Deryk Engelland, you better take the money and run. Maybe not the best example, but you get the idea.

I'm gonna interpret that as back in 90-92, Jagr wasn't really "Jagr" yet. He was more of a complimentary piece on the cup teams

Lemieux/Stevens... because then I would not have to practice because they didn't do that back then.

I like the general basis of the post, I think Gretzky/messier and Lemieux/Jagr is like a 1a or 1b scenario

The heatley part makes no sense, this is a cap era, I bet heatley would have preferred Chicago to Anaheim but they are over the cap, Anaheim signed him and they have 21 players under contract and stil 12m under the cap. Heatley also took 1 mil, not sure you can't get more less than that.

Also I love Sid and Malkin but there are other franchises in this league that are just as attractive as us,

I am a Pens fan through and through.. but a chance to play with Gretz and Mess would have been phenominal.

I am not taking away from the greatness of Mario/Stevens or Jagr... but Gretz and Mess could make me (a rec floor hockey player) a 50 goal scorer. There is no doubt as to why they dominated with multilple cups in the mid-late 80's and Messier continued on without #99 with the Oilers and Rangers for a couple more cups.

That being said.. as a fan. To watch... I would rather watch Lemieux/Stevens or Jagr and to me that is all that matters.

On the topic of this thread....

We had guys step up and take discounted deals this season (Ehrhoff and Downie).

What makes you think that Heatley was even wanted by the Pens? The guy has always been an enigma whereever he has gone. I believe, if you are shaking up a club, you stay away from these kind of players. You know what you are getting with Ehrhoff and Downie.. as for Heatley, you have no clue.

Didn't someone post an article yesterday about how Heatly worked well with the young players in Minnesota?

You are assuming the Pens had interest in signing another forward.
we usually don't have anyone willing to step up and say, "I am going to the PENS!"

Steve Downie, by your own admission, did.

There are so many factors in play here.

1. Am I only interested in winning? Then I definitely go with Gretky/Messier. Let's also not forget they had a bunch of other hall of famers there too. But the track record shows they won.

2. Who's the coach? I guess I'd choose Toews/Kane and play for Coach Q.

3. What city is it in? That certainly rules out Gretzky/Messier. Pittsburgh wins this one, so chalk one up for Crosby/Malkin and Mario/Jagr.

4. As others have said, how much am I getting paid? We have no way of knowing the answer, but it usually does drive the decision.
