Few notes:

- Actually interviewed for Asst. Coach position with Pittsburgh in 2010
- Used to run conditioning camp for NHL players prior to training camp
- Has had 2 consecutive contracts not renewed/extended (CBJ and STL)

Seems everything flying around the Twitterverse right now is that he is a great guy, and well respected around the league. Was fired after STL lost in first round. He was responsible for Blues PP that went 2-29 in the playoffs (per Yohe).

Based upon his resume of experience, I like the signing. I don't know much about him but I do like Hitch from the Blues and they have had success. Plus it brings in the coaching skills needed to handle the tough West Coast style of play. Looking forward to the upcoming season!

2-29 vs the best teams in the league.... He must be drooling with the potential on the Pens PPlay.

Second choice assistant to go with the third choice head coach who was forced to bring on an assistant who was hired by ownership before he was. Disasterous.

I have no opinion now, as usual. I will have to give him at least a game or two before I start really complaining. :pop:

I remember Gary Agnew as an Assistant Coach with the UNB Red Devils in '85-86. My first experience with a former player jumping to coach. They were HORRIBLE but it certainly was not his fault.

God, I love how new everything is going to be. It's going to be fun as a fan again to get to see how the team and coaches adapt to one another rather than know what to expect.

Hopefully it's not going to be like 1997-2005 when we saw a bunch of short stints from Constantine to Brooks to Hlinka to Kehoe to Olcyk.

Second choice? This was Johnston's hiring. Of course he's going to ask Greene to come on board as he's worked with him the past 6 years, is it the Penguins fault that he felt he could further his chances as a head coach by head coaching in the AHL? He was hired by Utica this off season and hadn't even coached a game yet. You think he should have spurned them and left them for this position?

You can blast the Pens organization all you want for the head coaching fiasco, but this hiring isn't even in the same ballpark.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to see what Johnston, Tocchet, and Agnew can do for this team. I can't wait to see a new brand of hockey on the ice, one that might actually start with a plan in place for certain teams, adjustments, matchups, and accountability.

Disasterous? Fiasco? Did you two really want a first choice who felt intimidated by the role? There's your disaster.

“Not about the players, but part of what I learned was that this is an intimidating position to take — and I sensed that when I talked to some of these guys,” Rutherford said of the search that ended with the hiring of Johnston.

I'm not upset at all over the head coaching hire. I was just pertaining to how he alluded to the apparent 3rd choice head coach.
