Prospect Camp

Postby pcm on Thu Jul 10, 2014 11:15 am

Have the Penguins released a list of who's attending camp next week? I haven't found anything.

It's a big year for the organization development-wise. The oft-publicised slate of young dmen will be given a chance at the NHL level this year, on Mario's orders. Bottereli has said WBS won't sign any AHL vets because they've finally got enough prospects down there, including forwards. Guys like Megna, Zlobin, Archibald, Sill, Payerl, Kuhnhackl, etc will be expected to carry the load. Add in Sunqvist and Kapanen playing overseas, and the Penguins' future might actually take a big step forward this year.

Perhaps by the end of camp we can put together a current top 10 list of Pens prospects...

My "off the top of my head" list would be (not inlcuding Bennett and Despres):

1. Pouliot
2. Kapanen
3. Jarry
4. Harrington
5. Dumoulin
6. Sundqvist
7. Megna
8. Zlobin
9. Archibald
10. Guentzal? Dea? Maybe Samuelsson?

Maybe you weren't invited. pop.

Non-organizational players that have been invited: Jake Hildebrand - goalie from Sparty Nation; Brad McClure, winger, from the proud Penticton Vees program; and Nick Lappin, a winger (I think) from Brown...

I'd like to invite some others, but I'm not in charge.

Maybe Tangradi will show up again. That seemed to be his peak as a Penguin.

I read a funny article about how some teams are posting almost play by play from the rookie camps. I'm going to see if I can find it... basically makes fun of those hard core fans who might know a little too much about guys who won't ever go beyond a rookie camp.

Florida is currently doing their camp and I've seen a few blogger friends I follow posting updates from there as well. Makes me wonder what we would've read and seen had prospect camps and 24/7 social media been a regular thing back when guys like Morozov, Dome and Kraft were among the prospect base.

It probably speaks volumes about the fanbase when you consider that there will probably be several thousand in attendance when the Pens have their prospect scrimmage. I think from that standpoint, the coverage is a good thing, especially when NHL Draft excitement is often tempered by the fact that many fans have no familiarity with these kids.

That said, there isn't a fanbase that seems to lose sight of realistic expectations quicker than Pens fans do, so I think it's always important to remember that these are kids competing against their peers and not NHL regulars. I keep thinking back to last year on Twitter when seemingly half the fans I follow had Eric Hartzell ready to supplant Fleury last summer.

Won't the local draftee get an invite, Lafferty?

I would probably slip Murray and maybe Hartzell in there somewhere.

What happened to that guy Sheary who was lighting it up in the playoffs in WBS? I haven't seen him play at all and have no idea if he's any good, but I would have thought he'd get at least an AHL deal after being almost a PPG player in the playoffs.

He was playing on an ATO and, as far as I know, never got a contract. I'd say his small stature (5'8" 175lbs) probably doesn't fit with a Penguins organization this seems to be wanting to get bigger again.

If I recall correctly, he was 35 playing against teenagers.

One of the Admins on the board goes to that camp and gives pretty indepth look at camp and the highlights. Its always a good read.

I wonder if it is open to the public?

Glaring omission from the list.....Phillip Samuelsson. Not sure why he isn't invited, unless he had some other personal commitment that he could not get out of.

Maybe not being waiver-exempt had something to do with it, in terms of the status of player who gets invited to these things.

Hmph. No Hartzell. Doesn't seem like he's going to make it as a pro. I actually had really high hopes for him when the Pens signed him out of college.

He brought basically the same resume as Thiessen did coming out of college. Likely heading the same route.
