Training Camp General Q's

Postby Candleonwater on Sat Jul 26, 2014 8:09 pm

I have a couple of basic questions - all I know is how the Capitals do things.

Do the Pens hold practices at Consol and Southpointe?
Do the practices tend to be more at one than the other?
Are practices open to the public?
Do they hold a Rookie camp prior to the veterans showing up?

Both.
Not sure on this one but I believe that they are at Southpointe for non-game days and Consol for game days.
Sometimes. You need to check Pens website.
Just finished their rookie camp which was held at Consol.

That's part of the reason for my questions. I've always called the July camp "Rookie Camp", however, I noticed that the Capitals hold a "Prospects Camp" in July, and on Sept 11 they are holding "Rookie Camp", followed by "Training Camp" beginning Sept 18...

We are chomping at the bit - NEED hockey!

The Pens will be doing the same. They just finished their Prospect's Camp. Rookie camp runs about 1 week before training camp.

I have no substantial input other than to say it is champing at the bit, not chomping. Sorry, I worked in sports journalism for awhile and I notice it.

While I appreciate your attempt to correct my grammar, chomping has actually become acceptable, and is more widely used these days.

So glad I live with the grammar police.

Just because he's correcting your grammar doesn't mean he's "grammar police" ...

I thought that was a fun little tidbit.

Most practices are at Consol. They still occasionally practice at Southpointe during the season, but that will be changing. They partnered with UPMC and are building a new practice facility in Cranberry, which should open some time next year. http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=685242

Consol practices are not typically open to the public, but they do usually open up at least 1 day during training camp. Southpointe practices are typically open, but sometimes they do close it off. Closed practices there are a little silly though, given there is a public restaurant that overlooks the rink. No idea how it will be at the new rink in Cranberry.

As others mentioned, the Pens did have a Prospect Camp earlier in the summer. I don't believe they will be having a rookie camp per se, but they are participating in a rookie tournament with Ottawa, Chicago, and Toronto in London, Ontario from September 13-16. http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?i ... TOURNAMENT

Training camp dates haven't been announced, but given the first preseason game is September 22, it will most likely start sometime during the week of September 18.

It's one of those really popular sports idioms that drive copy editors crazy. Every freelance piece of work that would come in would invariably have "chomping at the bit" somewhere and it just became one of those things we couldn't avoid. I can't read it without getting a twitch.

It gets a double-look from me as well...people got it wrong all the time, so they were just like, "well, whatever, both are fine..." - if only that could work in other facets of life...

It reminds me somewhat of the Jim Gaffigan bit...

[Impersonating a scientist] "That there is the male seahorse!"
[Other guy] "It's having a baby..."
[Scientist] "...the male has the baby."

Just expanding the scope of "being correct" in an effort to not be wrong...

Yeah, it's technically correct, but it sounds made up on the fly...

Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. Looked at the rookie tournament, sounds like it would be fun to watch.

The point of the bit is "why don't they just call that one the female."

Because I want to?

Seriously, I don't believe anyone should have to wade through an entire quote to see a response.

But champ and chomp mean essentially the same thing. Male and female are usually opposites. Example does not compute for me.

I look at it being used as the example being about being technically right about something that makes no sense.
