I honestly don't know enough about Spaling to know if this is a good or bad deal.

Done before arbitration like most deals it seems now-a-days...little higher than I might have liked, but we'll see what happens with it...hopefully him and Sutter can be lockdown brothers...

Was hoping for 2 a year. 2.2 isn't terrible, but more than I wanted.

More amusement in that it was back-to-back comments that were on the complete opposite end of the spectrum than trying to make a point.

I expect disagreement on this board (and any), but to have two comments, almost right off the bat, be that far apart is kind of what PR has felt like recently (see thread of "respectful" offseason discussion)

I actually like this deal. Spaling is probably the hardest worker the Pens currently have in their lineup now.

Feels like too much to me, but only because of our cap situation. He could certainly out-perform.

It seems like he could have gotten more in arbitration, so that makes this a decent signing, right?

I think, imo, what makes this a decent signing is that Spaling is a 2m player (remember, not that long ago Tyler Kennedy was a 2m player for the Pens, now making 2.35). He's not going to wow people. 2m/yr players rarely do, but I would be really surprised if he sure as heck isn't well-liked by halfway through the season.

He can play wing/center, is a solid 2-way player, and can contribute offensively (put up 32 points on the Predators last year). He's almost an ideal 3rd-liner.

What I meant was that unless he got awarded something ridiculous through arbitration, we would have been stuck with whatever they awarded, which in all probability would have been more than 2.2

I'm happy about it just because it theoretically makes our third line better. Hopefully we get Sutter too...(and then KK on the right? ermagurdddddddddd)

Maybe a shade high, but not unreasonable. Only about $200k more than Dwight King got in LA.

I like it because it is middle ground salary for a younger player on the rise who is anticipated to fit a need for the Pens. Perhaps more importantly, it now brings the focus on the Sutter situation. I hope the Pens can sign him to a favorable deal for both sides, BUT if they cannot, there could be an exciting trade here. Exciting in that it would add additional change to an already sufficiently flipped lineup.

Show of hands, who would have liked this deal on July 1 if he was not included in the Neal trade and not tendered by Nashville and signed to that contract as a UFA filling no need what so ever on this roster?

I don't even pretend to know anything about him so, like most signings, I would say lets see in October.

I used to write for thehockeywriters.com about the Perds, so I spent about 2 years watching a ton of their games. Hornqvist is the exact type of player this team needs. He's like a cross between Recchi and Morrow in that the has hands, but will stick himself in-front of the net and just irritate the living daylights out of opponent's defense and goalies.

Spaling has a lot of the on-ice qualities that people liked about Colby Armstrong, Max Talbot, and Matt Cooke. He goes into the corners and can just throw great checks like Kunitz (well, at least like he used to). Strong on the puck, great two-way player, should be an awesome complement to Sutter. Very similar players in a few areas and should mesh very well.
