Stempniak at $900K or Spaling at $2.2M?

Postby ivand87 on Thu Jul 31, 2014 12:15 pm

Why even do this? Because there really isn't that much to talk about right now :pop:

It wasn't a choice, probably. Who would I have? Not sure. Probably Stempniak at that price.

Stempniak wasn't an option for the Penguins @ that cap hit.

I liked the way Stempniak played when he was here. I don't know much about Spaling, but I expect he has less skill than Stempniak. In a bubble I take Stempniak at that price. I think Spaling will fit more what this team used to be and needs to get back to though. And that something is being able to cycle the puck and grind out games. Stempniak isn't that type of player. Stempniak is the sexier pick, but Spaling might be the better fit for this team.

Oh and yes have both on the team and kick out Adams is the best option. Addition by subtraction if you just remove Adams and replace him with well anyone not named Pyatt.

Ill take the one who doesnt have a choice and is going to play here rather than the one who was free to choose and went somewhere else.

I prefer Spalding because he has electrolytes.

Lee had his chance here, and did okay imho, BUT it wasn't enough. Apparently, Spaling has more effort/hustle and grit and will score moar and moar.

By that rationale, we should have traded Dupuis after the 2008 playoffs were over...

Irrelevant. Never an option.

Stempniak was not an option for the Penguins at any (reasonable) salary.

There is a giant list of guys that I would rather have than either one of them... but none of those would have happened either.

I'll take Perry for $2.5!! Oh wait, that isn't an option. Neither was Stempniak for $900k.

For me, it's a no-brainer. The Pens have an abundance of what Stempniak offers. (smallish, oldish, pseudo-gritty forwards) They are deficient in what Spaling offers.

If Stemp was retained, it would have been in place of another 30+ veteran, not Spaling, IMO. I also believe Stemp chose less money for a situation more favorable to him in other ways.

Stempniak is an OK player but how would he have fit in with the Penguins with Dupuis back? He's average playing in the top 6 and his game really isn't suited for the bottom 6.

People really think Stempniak is useful? Not good enough for top 6 on a good team. Doesn't play the right kind of game for bottom six on a good team. Isn't physical. Isn't fast.

I would be a fan of both:

Stempniak at 900k, but this wasn't an option, as stated.

Brawndo, the Thirst Mutilator.

I don't know enough about Spaling to judge his value at 2.2m but my first reaction is...way too much based on what I have seen, heard and read...but I will wait until the season starts to start upturning tables in a rage.
