oharman,

First of all, welcome to the group! We're happy to help out however we can! Let me take a shot at your questions.

oharman wrote:1. Are they legit authentics of their era or are they fakes?
Both of the jerseys in these eBay listings appear to be of-the-era authentics. This is from a time when there was no distinction between "on-ice authentics" and "retail authentics," so yes, either of these jerseys could've been worn on the ice, though the neck tagging could've been slightly different. I'll get into that later. Starter had some Indonesian "authentics" made, and I actually bought one and fought with a guy on eBay to return it. It was supposed to be a size 54, and all the tagging said it was, but it fit more like a 46. That's when some fakes just started popping up in the market.
oharman wrote:2. Did Lemieux even wear either version of these jerseys?
Mario played from 1984-85 through 1996-97, then retired, then came back 2000-01 and played through 2005-06 (source: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=3105). The Starter jersey listed is an air-knit material, which tells me it's a 1998-99 jersey (source: http://pittsburghhockey.net/penguins/uniforms-overview/jersey-tagging). During this season, Mario was the team's captain, hence the "C." The Koho jersey could've been from 2000-01 or 2001-02, the first of which was Lemieux's comeback year, in which he was not the captain (he was in 2001-02, after Jaromir Jagr was traded), so I'd call the Koho a 2000-01 jersey.
oharman wrote:3. If you guys were to choose, which one would be the winner and why?
There are pros and cons to each, from a collector's perspective. There's a rarity to a Lemieux jersey without a captain's "C." The Starter jersey has lettering that seems to be a bit off, and it's listed by an eBay seller who I believe letters his own jerseys. Many of his listings (past and present) seem to have letters that vary slightly from what the team used, though I'm a bit particular about that sort of thing. To me, the Koho lettering seems to be accurate while the Starter lettering is a smidge off. Pay close attention to the "E's" on the name bar and look for game-worn jerseys on the internet from reputable sources like classicauctions.net, gamewornauctions.net, and penguinschronicles.com. In the photos of similar jerseys, you'll also see some of the neck tagging variants between gamers and authentics, like the lack of a manufacturer's neck tag (here's an example of a 2000-01 gamer I have https://jeffshly.weebly.com/2001-02-koho-road-game-worn---jonsson.html). To me, the lettering on the Starter jersey just seems to be a a hair off.
oharman wrote:a. The starter is NWT but a size 54r that "should" fit based on measurements given and compared to my size 56 Edge 2.0
b. The KOHO is more expensive but used...and also made in Ecuador...(from reading on here, Ecuador was a real sourced location)
c. The KOHO is a size 56 and my fit better, but not sure how their sizing stacks up to Edge 2.0
d. Starter guy accepts returns...KOHO guy does not.
Now you're getting into the other aspects of your decision-making process. The Koho seller also has a jersey at the same price that includes that "C" if you'd rather have it. One is more expensive, but it fits you. Is this something you're looking to frame? To wear? And, oh yeah, the $130 price difference! I can't answer these questions for you. I don't know your situation, if $130 is worth the spend to you to get lettering that is exact, or if the Starter is "good enough." One thing I can address is the Ecuador thing. The Koho jersey has a tag in the neck that says it's made in Canada. This tells me it was made at the old CCM factory in Canada. Where are you seeing reference to Ecuadorian manufacture?

Feel free to reach out to the group here or to me on my website (link above) with more questions. Good luck and happy collecting!

Hi Jeffshly,

Thanks for the warm welcome and the great answers! I looked at the listings again and I got my central American countries mixed up...the Starter listed El Salvador rather than Ecuador...The down side of getting into a jersey loop at 1am....

My plan for this jersey would be to wear it. Hockey is really the only sport I enjoy and being a Penguins fan goes back quite a way for me. Not to mention, I work with primarily Capitals fans so any way I can irritate them more, the better.

Thanks to your input and information, I'm leaning toward the Koho. I like the fact it's made in Canada. I'll check out the other listing as well with the "C." I hadn't run across that one, so thanks for pointing that out. For the money, I think it's worth having the jersey that has the correct lettering/numbering (not saying I don't own some that are not correct...). I'm done with dealing with the fakes. You can truly tell the difference in material.

So, I'm heading to the Koho, which leaves the final question about sizing. Do you or anyone else here have the dimensions of a Koho 56 by chance? I've looked for size charts for them, but they vary quite a bit too and considering the year these came out, I'm not sure if the dimensions have changed since then.

Thanks again for all the help and for putting up with my questions! BTW, your site looks great! I bookmarked it so I can read up on your collection.

I don't have a Koho 56. I can tell you that the size is supposed to be the circumference at the jersey at the armpit; for example, 28 inches across the chest plus another 28 inches across the back, since the jersey would lay flat, equals a size 56.

I have a Koho 54 game worn (https://jeffshly.weebly.com/2001-02-koho-road-game-worn---jonsson.html) and a Koho 52 authentic (https://jeffshly.weebly.com/2002-03-koho-road-authentic---kovalev.html). I realize the second one is a different style, but sizing should be the same. With this information, you should be able to extrapolate and get a good idea from there.

Koho 54 Jonsson jersey: armpit measurement of 27" across, with sewn gussets sewn into the armpits to extend to to 28.5"; top of shoulder at collar to bottom rear hem is 33".
Koho 52 Kovalev jersey: armpit measurement of 26.5" across, with sewn gussets sewn into the armpits to extend to to 28"; top of shoulder at collar to bottom rear hem is 32".

Therefore, if I had to guess, the Koho 56 would measure something like this: armpit measurement of 27.5" across, with sewn gussets sewn into the armpits to extend to to 29"; top of shoulder at collar to bottom rear hem is 34". As you know, since this style of jersey is loose-fitting, there's some wiggle room in there.

Cool, that lines up pretty close to my Edge jerseys. I have a 56 and a 60 and you measurements seem to fall somewhere in between which would be ideal. I'm going to jump on the Lemieux Koho with the "C." I'm kind of a patch freak so having the "C" on there just seems to be complete when looking at a Lemieux jersey.

Thanks again for all the help and info. Glad I found a place with folks that can help round out my collection.

I got one before, but the customization guys screwed up by putting the 100 NHL patch above the player number *cries cries*

Sorry for the delayed response. Had a ton of things going on this weekend. They had both blacks and whites. Not sure of the number, but a quick Google search of Pens Gear at PPG Paints Arena should get you what you need. Good luck, and no reward necessary. Happy to help!

Just called in, and they dont have it. Anyone looking to sell theirs? Willing to pay up to $200 USD for a size S/blank one!

Check your PM - I can help you get it.

ONE MILLION THANKS TO @lesky

Size XL is like around 50/52? Jerseybaron has one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/PITTSBURGH-PEN ... SwdtlZpbWT

But yeah, the 16-17 away jersey is HELL/IMPOSSIBLE to find.

It's a fake jersey. An authentic jersey will never only cost you $140, think about it.

Penguinsfansproshop.com is a dealer in Chinese knockoffs. It seems as though they're using a stock photo for the jersey in the link you provided.

It's a blank jersey, you can buy the patches on amazon and customize it with the name/#/A.

yeah, I'm aware of that but I also don't really care. I've bought some knockoffs before and have had good luck with what I've gotten. I think once I got one where you had the option of adding a SCF patch and when I got the jersey they had sewn it on at a weird angle. :face: the others I've bought have been quite good.

Need some advice from the group (and I'm looking at you, blurryhaze!):

I just received a 1989 Robbie Brown All-Star authentic in the mail. One thing I've noticed is that the back numbers were glued, then sewn, but given that this jersey is almost 29 years old, the adhesive has started to fail and the numbers are starting to "bubble" in some places. Has anyone run across this before and, if so, do you have any ideas on how to fix this?

Since the jersey is CCM Air-Knit, I'm thinking that some targeted spray-on adhesive to the inside of the jersey, followed by an ironing job, could/should do the trick, but I'd rather defer to someone who has some experience in the area before I start experimenting on it myself.

Anyone able to help a brother out?

Nice!!

I think I'd try just the iron first and then try the spray adhesive from behind + iron after that if just the iron doesn't work. Iron alone probably should do the trick though, I'd think. Even if it doesn't activate the glue, it will at least activate the stickiness on the underside of the numbers themselves and stick down.

Will give it a try. Figured I'd ask the expert!

The jersey is sweet! It amazes me how jerseys back then were cut so differently compared to authentics just two years later! This 52 fits me well through the torso, but the sleeves and the jersey itself are so short. Shorter than the size 50 All-Star I have from 1990. Then, in '91, they were cut like the jerseys we all know and love!

Yes!

I have a few from 87-88 that I thought were just oddballs...just like you said - short sleeves, short total length. Being on the smaller side that I am, I actually love the fit myself!
