Honestly, if he keeps this level of play up and can pass Maatta up I wouldn't be surprised to see him exposed instead especially if his play trails off again. Schultz is still just 26 and has some cost control for one more year as an RFA. It wouldn't be a horrible idea if he keeps getting better here.

There's no way I see that happening. Maatta could net them something decent back if they really wanted to move him. There's no way they're going to let him go for free just to keep a 3rd pairing defenseman. Schultz is still insulated and wouldn't be if he was playing top 4.

If it gets to the point where they actively try to move Maatta to just get rid of his cap and no one will even give up a pick for him they could do this.

Did his -2 in Brooklyn play a role? I didn't see enough of the game to comment either way myself, and the radio didn't indicate specifically, but that line seemed to have a rough night.
