Ek rumor Cole to Hawks???

Postby nastystang05 on Mon Jan 08, 2018 8:26 pm

This probably has little merit but nonetheless something to discuss on a cba break. Ek is reporting Cole to the Hawks. GMJR has traded with them in the past. What could be the return if true?

I couldn't think of anyone off the top of my head. Skimmed their roster real quick and I've still got nothing. I'd rather keep Cole and send them Hunwick for a pick.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yea. Doesn't make much sense to me unless we are unloading him for picks and cap space.

Patrick Sharp? They only got a couple of call-ups under ELC otherwise.. Sharp would pretty much be a rental, turns UFA and is 36.

If Chicago is our trade partner, I have no clue what you'd trade for at all. Anisimov would be a catch, but also on IR right now. Kane, Toews and Saad all far too expensive to even consider cap wise.

Now.. I'm not sure what the word in Illinois is, but that's like considering trading Kessel, Crosby, Malkin ... and Letang or Hörnqvist.

So maybe not Cole?

Chicago would have to send back at least the equivalent of Cole's cap hit I believe.

They waived Franson ($1mil) today so if they sent back ~$1.1mil it should be doable on their part.

Okay, a trade with the Hawks involving Cole makes sense.

- No one in the East will want to trade with the Pens on the risk that they might make the Pens better (see Friedman's 30 Thoughts from a few weeks back)
- GMJR owes Chicago after that Scuds for Daley trade, so he's going to give them a great dman in Cole
- Chicago is like the Pens, older team with veteran cup leadership, chasing that final cup to mint a dynasty... Why not trade with the team you completely own in the East... they do, they own the Pens.

I actually put more stock in something from TIOPS than Eklund......by several miles. His exact post was "Hearing Ian Cole to the Hawks possible" This really seems like seeing Franson on waivers, and knowing Penguins are shopping Cole, adding 1+1 and getting 37.

There was an Anisimov to Penguins rumor earlier in the year, that I don't think had much validity. Hawks are thin at center just like the Penguins, so very, very doubtful they would trade him. I know Richard Panik has been bounced around their lines and even a healthy scratch, but he's a RW and wouldn't be a fit here because of that. Hawks don't have a 2nd round pick this year, so even a Cole for a pick seems unlikely. Hawks aren't a likely trade match.

The only one I could find was basically Anisimov, but, he don't seem to be a good playoff performer, at least if you look at the stats, but they don't, of course tell the whole story.

they are really thin at centers, far worse then us ...

How about Ryan Hartman? Listed as a RW but was playing LW at least the last game? 31p last year and 20p right now.

I would be okay with a deal built around Anisimov and Cole. 8-)

Not realistic... but then again Daley for Scuderi...

Franson was waived.

Any chance the Pens pick him up. He has a 1 year 1 million conract.

Also, any chance he is being waived in order to pickup someone like Cole?

Franson cleared waivers. Still a chance that he could be traded by the Hawks, as he is now waiver exempt for the next 30 days.....so an acquiring team could add him to NHL or AHL roster.

How do no teams want Franson at 1 million a year? So strange.

So Hawks waive Franson and he has cleared. Now the Hawks informed Brent Seabrook this morning he will be a healthy scratch. Puzzling moves in Hawks land these days.

To Pens: Seabrook ($6.88), Saad ($6.00), Bouma ($1.00) [$13.88 total]
To Hawks: Letang ($7.25), Cole ($2.10), Hagelin ($4.00) [$13.35 total]

Franson has good numbers this year, leading the Hawks in shot attempt differential by a good margin. How don't the Isles pick him up?
