The Call-Up Caroussel

Postby Puck-Lurker on Thu Feb 08, 2018 7:07 pm

Might as well have a thread on it, because there's been a lot of traffic back and forth between WBS and PIT.

Who's up in PIT and who's down in WBS. I'm not going to go into scratched players with only NHL games with the organisation.

Players with AHL and NHL games this season:
Jarry, DeSmith, Trotman, Corrado, Dea, Sprong, McKegg, Aston-Reese, Simon, Jooris

CURRENTLY UP
- DeSmith
- Aston-Reese
- Simon
- Jooris
- Sprong
- Di Pauli
- Johnson
- Blueger
- Wilson
- Dea
- Bengtsson
- Summers
- Tinordi
- Pedan
- Jarry
- Leighton

Kühnhackl, Hörnqvist on IR. Sheary may be coming off the IR list soon. Rowney did not practice.

Teddy Blueger called up, likely to replace Recchi on the 4th line if need be. ;-)

Were you being ironic about not being able to keep up, or did they switch the two again. :scared: :fist:

I get it we've seen a lot of WBS changes this year, but I think it's a good thing. I don't think it's a coincidence that we've seen more rookies in the past 2+ years then the previous 10-15 combined. The Ray Shero idea of "get whatever veteran that hasn't retired to play the 4th line" isn't really a good way to build a team. The Pens have the same system at the NHL and AHL level for a reason, to let the kids be put into a position to succeed when they come up. Rust, Sheary, Murray, Jarry, Kuhnhackl, Guentzel etc. are the reason they won the cups, my opinion. They added an element of youth, speed, energy and the rest of the team fed off that enthusiasm. But also, they replaced the "this years UFA retread (Adams, Iginla, Morrow, etc)" in the lineup.

Now, let's see ZAR, Bleuger, Simon, Sprong, etc. add to this years Stanley Cup try. :thumb:

I'd still like to see Pedan and Tinordi get a callup and get into a game or two. When healthy, Ruhwedel and Hunwick should be our 7th and 8th guys. Corrado, Pedan, and Tinordi would be my guess for next 3 guys up.

Nice to see Blueger getting a look with the big boys, but I wan Bergström to! But, I think he is injured again? And he is at the end of his contract this year? So we might not ever see him?

I'm with you FLPensFan, I really want to see Pedan! However, getting to see these guys likely means injuries, which I don't want... so I'm just going to be patient on this...

Based on today's Coach's Corner (feb-9), they're looking at WBS at their prospects. When it comes to giving people chances -- "When they're playing particularly well" (in the AHL) seems to be the criterium that gives rise to call ups.

I do read into this that they're getting to everybody they think they can use, giving a lot of guys a go. Blueger, ZAR, Sprong, Dea, Simon and so on. If you're doing particularly well in WBS, you'll be in the conversation, as a reward, is how I interpreted it. The only note-worthy forward in Wilkes-Barre that hasn't been called up yet is Haggerty (yet another RW!) -- I'm curious if he's for real.

That said, don't look for them to call up any defencemen with 8D on the current roster (unless a trade occurs).

Hope he can go down and work on things that he was lacking at the NHL level.

WBS doesn't play until Friday either......and with Kuhnhackl and Hornqvist still on the shelf, Penguins only have 12 forwards. This was likely done for cap purposes, to squeeze a few more $$ into available cap. If he were to come back up Friday, they gain about 15K in cap space. Not much, but with prorating of cap hits the rest of the year, every little bit helps if they are going to make a move.

I believe Haggerty is on an AHL contract. If so he probably has earned a 2 way for next year. DiPauli is a guy I'd like to see.

Thats good, Simon needed to go down to get back in shape and build some momentum. And, I read somewhere they needed to be sent down to be eligible to the AHL playoffs? I don't know the rules but, something like that.

Yes, players to be eligible for AHL playoffs had to be on the WBS roster by the end of the trade deadline. We then get 5 call ups r st if the season. I believe DeSmith is one and ZAR is as never sent down so he’s up for good at this point.

Omlynplayers we can add to WBS for the playoffs are juniors whose seasons end and college players after a certain date.

With the departure of Ian Cole, I sure do hope we give Ruhwedel a chance, as well as Corrado and Pedan. Hunwick is not the answer, and we should use these last 20 games to find out who has the best chemistry with Oleksiak before the playoffs start.

I think it's far more likely that a proven NHL defenseman finds his footing with a regular role and playing time, compared to an AHL non-prospect.
