College free agents

Postby sjnhiils on Mon Mar 12, 2018 3:45 pm

TIOPS mentions the Pens being interested in 2 d-men. Don't subscribe but my guess would be Brickley (Min St.) and Schuldt(ST. Cloud St.). Autio from Penn St. might also be worth a look. Some believe Brickley is NHL ready but could he withstand a long playoff run? Might be worth a look considering they didn't acquire any depth at the trade deadline.

I could see these kind of undrafted FA D not signing with the Pens because of the current roster. 5 larger $, multi year contracts in place. Oleksiak will most likely get resigned. Ruhwedel with 1 more year holding a 7th roster spot. In order for those undrafted D to get a real shot (ie: top-7, much less top-6), someone would need to get injured or traded. Not saying that they 100% wouldn't sign here, but they might prefer to go somewhere where they have a better chance of making the big club roster sooner.

Taking the opposite side somebody like Brickley could see the number of college players on the Pens roster, and especially the number of undrafted college players and think this would be a good fit for him to play with high end players, and develop which ultimately turns into substantial $$$.

Rutherford will always look to move players if the deal is right. If you are a solid defenseman, come in and outplay Mattas or Dumoulin then those are the guys that would get moved for assets.

College players and I drafted free agents have to look at Pittsburgh as a place of opportunity considering the recent history with both on this team. Anyone new coming in though will help WBS when we call up our Black Aces.
