Pens vs Caps - What is your Round Two series prediction?

Postby Penspal on Tue Apr 24, 2018 8:25 am

Alright, here we go again. If you were part of the 19 who got round 1 right, speak up so we can see if you can keep it going!

Running this for three days, so hold off if you need injury updates (etc).

i say 4-2 Pens.

I was right in the first round saying 4-2 but after game 1 I was like its gonna be 4 straight, then they won game 2 and I was like ok they might be here to play, then games 3 and 4 yeah we got this in the bag, opps game 5 loss and it was buckle down they could push it to 7. losing 4-2 in the 2nd in game 6 I was loke ok game 7 in the paint can... Jake breaks out and its over....

Man you forget the rollercoaster the NHL playoffs are.

Same as I voted in round 1, Pens in 6.

To summarize (from NHL.com): "Washington has played Pittsburgh 10 times in the playoffs, including second-round losses in each of the past two seasons (six games in 2016, seven games in 2017). The Capitals have lost nine of the 10 series, including the past seven."

Not this time either.

I think if the Pens can split in Washington the first two games we will win in six...I would say five but we never do win game 5's.

I think the Caps are more vulnerable than past two years we have played them and I think the Pens can expose Holtby early in the series.

Key in this series for the Pens is figuring out 3rd D pairing and hoping Malkin and Hags come into series healthy. Here is hoping they practice this am when they take the ice.

Took Pens in 5 the first round.

Caps in 6. The Pens look completely disinterested at times sprinkle in some Letang mistakes and the Pens won't be able to score at will like they did against Philly.

Pens in 7. Pens won't be disinterested in this series, the personal rivalry with their stars is too great. And they won't win Game 1 7-0, so they won't get over confident. They will lose some, but win when it matters.

I voted Pens in 5 but id say 6 is more likely.

The Pens hold a pretty sizable mental edge in this one and if they can get to the Caps and Holtby early, they may not be able to get it back together like they did against Columbus. The defense is certainly going to be the difference in this one. Keeping Malkin focused will also be important....they'll try their darnedest to get him to get involved in the extracurricular stuff.

Caps in five and I won't be shocked if it's four. Too many injuries, too many playoff games, no MAF (who was the main reason they won last year's series).

Up front the Pens are better but the back end and goalie play for the Pens are really struggling. Give the Caps the edge there. Carlson is a beast

I picked the Penguins in 7. My other prediction is, with or without current injuries (Malkin, Hagelin), I think the Penguins are going to need Brassard to have a bigger impact on the game. Kessel is a close 2nd. Penguins will need more output from guys not Crosby, Malkin, Hornqvist, and Guentzel. Sheahan, Sheary, and ZAR are going to need to chip in some goals.

It's tough to predict not knowing Malkin's status.

Either way though, I don't buy any of this talk about the Caps being loose with no expectations - the pressure is still on them in a big way.

The Pens losing would not be a big deal (relatively speaking) as they have the last two Cups and they are setup to contend next season as well. The Caps losing yet another series to the Pens, and in the second round yet again, would be devastating. Their core is running out of chances.

Who is Ovechkin going to needless take runs at if Malkin does not play?

Probably Sheary....but he falls down on the ice enough on his own without being touched, so that could be interesting.

Facial injury to Ovechkin by hitting the glass when Sheary falls. Sheary better watch for Ovie's skates on his landing, though.

I picked Pens in 7 to be optimistic, but I really could see the series going in lots of different directions. The Pens are banged up and have been inconsistent, while the Caps seem to be on a roll after starting poorly, so I could see the Caps winning a shorter series. Conversely, the Caps were pretty inconsistent themselves against Columbus, and the Pens are clearly in their heads, so if the Pens have the switch flipped to on at the start, the Caps might fold, making it a pretty short series in the Pens' favor.

Pens in 7. Neither team is as strong as the last couple of series they met, but I think the Pens will find a way. Murray and Company will have to be the same group who had two shutouts and not the bumbling of Game 6. Also please be one of the few teams to cover AO just above the faceoff circle on the left side during a PP and make someone else score. Please?

My biggest concern is that Letang's usual 2-3 horrid mistakes a game may directly end up in the net once or twice a game. The blueliners have their work cut out for them as Olesiak is coming off not his best, Ruhwedel looks like he hit his ceiling around Game 4, and I'm scared Sullivan puts in master of disaster Hunwick. Winning a series with both Letang and Hunwick playing is really high-risk.

Caps in 6, Holtby will play better than Murray, nothing else matters, rather everything else evens out

The series will hinge three players: Murray, Murray and Murray ...... did I say Murray? Why, yes I did.

He will need to smother a lot of mistakes.

I picked Pens in 7 in my original bracket...However, seeing Murray’s inconsistencies, how banged up Phil seems, and the Geno and Hags injuries, I’m saying Caps in 6. They’re going to win some time and they are actually playing better playoff hockey—a more defensive game and more north/south than east/west—than they ever have. If they get better goaltending than Murray provides, I see them winning this series with all of our injuries
