I was going to take Pens in 6 if the series started on Saturday, but with the likely absence of Malkin and Hags for game 1, I guess I'll go with Pens in 7... I've usually felt pretty confident about Caps' series, but this one has me nervous. I'd hate to see the Pens' streak get broken by the Caps. LGP!

Pens in 6. Until they lose to these guys, nothing has changed.

Caps have the same chance as the Steelers beating a Brady-led Patriots

I was part of the 19 that got the first round correct at 4-2.

I am far less certain about the outcome of this series. But I'm going to go with the Pens in 7!

It 's a good thing for the pens to have had turmoil, be short handed, and silence beastly philly crowd.
Caps riding a 4 game high.
Every series is different- I'm sticking with 5 games to move on.

If no Malkin & Hagelin for Game 1, a split in DC will be very difficult. Add to that the Pens problems on home ice in Flyers series - Caps in 5.

Take a well-deserved Summer off, heal, retool, get rid of Letang and shoot for the Cup next year...

I wobbled back and forth between 6 or 7. I went with Pens in 6.

Same as you on both counts, I think they can gut it out but it will go the distance this time!

Pens in 4. Murray's the better goalie under pressure/in the playoffs. The team responded well without Malkin.
With or mostly without Malkin, we need Sheahan back with Phil. Spread the scoring out a bit more. As the playoffs get further along, we might have trouble scoring with Kessel, Malkin and Crosby all in the top 6.

I say Pens in 6. I wouldn't be surprised if they lost to Tampa/Boston, but I just don't see Crosby allowing the team to lose to OV and the Caps.

Could be silly of me to think that, but I do think there is a mental edge that the Captain has over OV and the Caps.

Oh and Murray needs to be Murray!

My prediction:

Capitals win series 4-1 in games.

Reasons:
Malkin is absent from game 1. And if he will play at some point he will much less than 100%

Hagelin did not even travel to Washington, and probably has a concussion. Hagelin missed 2 months of the regular season with concussion and is unlikley to recover in time to play vs Washington. And should he make a late comeback, he probably will not be very good.

Phil Kessel is playing hurt since 2-3 months back in is a shadow what he has been when fully healthy the last 2 seasons.

Matt Murray has been subpar or bad since returning from concussion (the 2nd or 3rd of his career already) Murrays father also died during the same time and it appears Murray is struggling badly to get into rhytm.

Hagelin is also the Penguins best penalty killer, and the Penguins will now have to rely on Carter Rowney and Kuhnackl, who barely gets to play at even strength because Sullivan does not trust them.

Also dont forget the Penguins probably will show some fatigue due to their repeat championship wins - there is a reason a three-peat is almost impossible to pull out.
...
All in all, if the Capitals are to beat the Penguins anytime, this is the time do it!

Also, dont forget the Capitals outplayed the Penguins last season, the only reason the Penguins had a chance was that Fleury was playing out this world. If Murray had been in net, I gurantee Washington would have advanced.

The only way I see the Penguins have a chance is if they manage to get it to 7 games and Washington mentally folds, somehow thinking "here we go again".

I would not even be surprised to see a Capitals sweep if they take game 1.

I must have missed this response. Sorry about the delay...

The Pens are lucky this isn’t a 3-0 Caps series lead. Aside from that quick, 3-goal outburst during the first game, the Caps have controlled overall play. Kessel is (obviously) hurt, Letang is playing like (surprise) Letang, the Caps glove Murray’s goaltending (the Niskanen goal was a killer), and Wilson is running over everything he sees with absolutely zero Pens pushback to his antics. Losing 3 in-a-row on home ice is inexcusable for this team during the regular season, let alone the playoffs. The likelihood of this team winning 3 of the next 4 is looking pretty bleak, so I will stand on my “Caps in 5” prognostication.

The 2 biggest mistakes this team made: signing the Letang extension (disliked it when it occurred) and keeping Murray over Fleury.

Letang has a 2-cent head when it comes to hockey. U would expect more when spending that much $$ on a top-line D. Dealing Letang (if they can) should be an off-season priority.

I do not argue for Fleury over Murray because I am a big fan of Fleury - I am not. Instead, it was always my belief that keeping Fleury made more sense because dealing Murray (after winning 2 Cups) could have helped acquire picks or young pieces to start restocking as the careers of Crosby & Malkin begin to fade. Fleury could have played out the final years of their careers adequately. Keeping Murray? NOBODY is coming to the PPG to watch a goaltending duel when Crosby & Malkin retire. Goaltending, though important to this organization, has never won them a Cup. Star firepower has won the Pens’ Cups.

I got it right. Yippee. Thought maybe without Backstrom we might get it to 7 but not this year.
