Did simple clears become the death of this team?

Postby Lesky on Tue May 08, 2018 11:46 am

Oh well....so here it goes....

One important question left to answer before extended vacation :D

Everyone has seen it in almost every game thread, after an allowed goal, it was suggested that simple clears would be the death of this team from early fall til the bitter ending vs the Caps.

What remains now is to answer the question: Did "simple clears" become the death of this team in the end?

Please note that I am writing this post in half-joking manner as I personally find it funny that this term was used all the time 8-)

Yes and no, it was a problem, but I seen more goals scored on the rush than extended zone time goals.

Either way we don't win the cup this season with the given team.

They didn't kill it but they sure mortally wounded it, that and giving up breakaways and odd man rushes and also some goals let in that Murray himself probably doesn't know how they got in, but I don't know how many times I found myself yelling at the TV "get it the hell outta there!!!!!!"

I'd say it was more turnovers at the point and during zone entry. That and not having Fleury as a clutch breakaway goalie in net. I did not have a good feeling about Murray facing the Caps. They have had his number a few times in the regular season, and Fleury beat them last year. Too many odd man rushes and breakaways against Murray.

Hmm.

Did I get the caption wrong btw?

Was the correct quote: "Simple clears will be the death of this team"?

I just had that come up in my mind now...obviously it means the same, but figured it would fair to have the correct quoting.

Yes, I got it wrong. Here is the original quote, will correct the topic now also.

God I wish it hadn't had to type that since the beginning of the year, but I do.

I dont know know if it was the death of the team but it certainly didnt help.

So many times they should have just been able to slide the puck up the wall and clear the zone but didn't. The Caps regain the puck and the Pens looks like the keystone cops trying to get the puck out. Every single one of those failed attempts adds up to more TOI and extended effort which is damaging over a 7 game series.

The Pens should work on backhand clears all summer. In too many PK situations, the attempted backhanded clears turned into dribblers to the blue line.

The Pens should have their defense spend the summer with Larry Murphy and perfect the Murphy dump.
