Penguins post-season injuries

Postby FLPensFan on Wed May 09, 2018 10:54 am

Nothing official yet, but clean out day is today so we should be learning more over the next few hours.

From Justin Schultz, looked like he stated he was completely healthy to end the season.
Russian newspaper semi-outs Geno knee injury, stating that Malkin will not play in World Championships due to his current knee injury.

Encouraging response from Olek as well...I think he comes back to Pens with a little raise.

I tend to think his knee would be fine to play on if he wasn't coming off two Cup runs. Instead it is a nice excuse to take a long break.

Brassard apparently declined to name his specific injury, but wasn't happy he missed the games at the end of the season. Brassard said he was still thinking too much at times during the playoffs, and also said he is willing to move into a top 6 winger role next year if that is what the coaches prefer.

Not sure if someone asked him about wing, or he freely gave that up.

Hornqvist says he is healthy. Crosby says he has minor bumps and bruises, nothing serious.

Seeing that Hornqvist is going to Worlds to play for Sweden. Crosby (fatigue) and Malkin (knee) are listed as not going.

Simon has a fractured left thumb. Said this came later in Caps series, and didn't effect him.

Letang says he thought it would be easier to come back, but admits he often had one good game, then one bad game. Said that was tough to play like that. Expected to go home and train harder this summer to get back to form.

On trade talk, Letang said "I sacrifice everything for this team. My only goal is to spend the rest of my career here."

Aston-Reese on his diet right now: “Just soups, and smoothies, (smiles) and ice cream.”

Aston-Reese on what he had to have done: "Plates and screws. Hopefully I don't set off too many metal detectors."

Aston-Reese: "I kind of feel like a chimpmunk."

ZAR is speaking as well as possible.

• Diet is all liquid for a while
• Thought Caps were taunting him on bench but said it was “heat of the moment”
• Wilson did not reach out to him
• Concussion is doing better

Aston-Reese: “I’m just focusing on recovering... I really excited - I want to help this team win next year.”

"It was definitely frustrating. I was just coming back into my game, getting the hesitation out of it."

ZAR expresses no ill will toward Tom Wilson. Also said he’s eating a lot of ice cream because of the broken jaw.

If he is that motivated I have no doub he can return to form.

Asked Kris Letang how he felt he played in the playoffs: “The only one I have in my mind right now is Game 5.”

Said before I'd be ok with trading him, but don't see how Penguins make a trade and get fair value back, specifically, a top pairing defenseman. I'd rather chalk his season up to previous year injuries and long playoffs affecting his training, and let's see how he bounces back next year.

Rutherford speaking to the media now. Starts by congratulating the Caps.

Rutherford: "It's obvious that I'm going to keep an open mind to making some changes, and I will make some changes." #Pens

GM Rutherford: "It's obvious that I'm going to keep an open mind to making some changes. I'm going to make some changes. I can't tell you who that's going to be right now. We're a good team. We will be a good team moving forward. We will have a chance to win again."

Rutherford says Kessel has played through injuries all year. To his credit, he played through them all season, but feels they just caught up to him in the playoffs. None of his injuries will require surgery.

Rutherford said Brassard “played with an injury that was very difficult to play through.” Said it dated to late in season.

Rutherford says Brassard's injury, whatever it was, was effectively the reason he didn't click in the playoffs.

Rutherford on Brassard: There was an adjustment, then he got an injury that's very difficult to play with in the last two weeks of the season. He tried to play through it; made it very difficult for him to play the way he's capable of.

(My guess is groin injury).

Rutherford asked how long he plans to stay on as GM: "I think the best answer is I may be around longer than you guys."

Rutherford on Sprong next year: "He should be a regular on our team."

I don’t get why they won’t say specifically what was wrong with a Kessel and Brassard. If there was some context around what they were playing through maybe some fans would understand why they were trash in the playoffs.

That's interesting. I was waiting to hear that Phil's right leg was just hanging on by tendons or something like that.

Also from what I'm seeing on Twitterverse, Phil has already left town.

Rutherford also said Brassard's injury was more significant than was let on.
"He got an injury he couldn't overcome." Again, no specifics from anyone. Use your imagination I guess.

Rutherford said Hunwick "played fine" but in retrospect had a hard time carving out a role for himself.
"He put too much pressure on himself, maybe."
