It was a bridge deal. They gave him a 3 yr deal because they were cash strapped. The contract runs out after this season. Even though he's an RFA, he couldl push that $10M range next year. A shorter contract with a lower AAV was necessary, but they could have gotten him for much less on a long term deal than they likely will next summer. It's keep the cap down now, but pay for it later.

I could see Kucherov asking for the moon if he has another regular season like this past year, tbo. They will be forced to pay him more than their captain, or lose him.
