Madden also says 5 years, with no $$ coming from Madden.

Dejan says it is 6 years, 14.5M, which is 2.41M per year.

5 or 6 years seems like too long and a huge risk if the Penguins can't get Johnson's play to improve.

5 years doesn't make sense for either side, too much risk for both(pens either stuck playing bad player longer term, or Johnson stuck being underpaid longer term if he improved) a short cheap deal would have been ok but that much AAV is worrying.

I was thinking 6 is better than 5 for that reason...Either way don't think he finishes that contract...I thinking he has 2-3 decent years left.

DK has backed off to 5 years now.

He's saying his agent was pushing for 6, since everyone else was offering 5, but the Pens held firm at 5. He's saying 5 for a total of 14.5

So, if this is happening, what is the scouting on him? I have not really seen him play. What is it that JR sees that could be the reason for the contract?

14.5 years, at $5,000,000 total? That doesn't sound so bad.

I don't have an official "scouting report" to reference, but he's very athletic/mobile/has a great pass...but seriously lacking in the head and defensive fundamentals. Basically, you don't want to partner him with Letang.

Nostalgia?

While GM of the Carolina Hurricanes, Rutherford selected Johnson No. 3 overall in the 2005 NHL draft, but the University of Michigan player declined to turn pro. So in October 2006, Rutherford shipped him to the Los Angeles Kings in a package that brought Tim Gleason to Carolina. At the time, Rutherford said Johnson "is going to be a very, very good, if not great, NHL player."

Maybe he'll be like Ryan Hamhuis and not sign.
I'm hoping in January, I will say, nice addition- Ian Cole who?

The guy was 44th in shot blocking with 135 blocked shots in 77 games with the Jackets.

1 season ago Johnson played 82 games and was 5-18-23 and was a +23.

He still has skill and grit. He has never played on a team like this before with this much talent. It’s not like the cap hit is $6mill. Could be a bargain if he “gets to his game”. :)

PS was surprised to see he has 21 points in 23 playoff games. Impressive stat.

You should look at his other years. If you love plus minus so much you’ll see he’s never had another season in the plus column.

He’s a bad defenseman and the eyes and numbers prove it.

I don't get this move. I thought JR was hesitant to give out term bc he'd have to resign Guentzel, Murray, etc in the not too distant future. This deal sucks.

Terrible move. Getting a guy who is past his not-so-great prime for 5 yrs? Hoping this just isn't accurate.

Good article that very much lays out all the facts as to why it is indeed baffling the Pens(or really anyone else) are even remotely considering giving Johnson a 5 yr deal.

Exactly and I agree, yet there's actually people on here saying that he's not declining, he's only 31! :face:

This just doesn't seem like a GMJR move. He's 31 and not a star defenseman, why the heck would you be signing him for 5 years? He'd be a 3rd pairing dman and he's not exactly a candidate to "get better" as he gets experience. This would be like signing a 4th liner to a 5 year contract. Like a Matt Martin type thing.
