From DK's live feed from camp:

Sprong turns it over at his own blue line with careless backhand pass ... but gets it right back, steams up ice and feeds Crosby for a one-time goal. Sprong in a nutshell, right?

Witnessing for first time why J.R. loves Juuso Riikola. Smart, smooth, chin always up looking for next play. Really belongs.

I like it! Happy to not see Sprong and ZAR on the 4th line. Give them a solid chance.

Simon can go on the 4th line :)

Good to get it going again. Long summer!

So what he's saying.. JR loves JR.

That makes sense.

Re: Sprong. All staff will have noticed is the lost puck. Personally I think that's a growing pains thing. I'd be far more interested to hear how his puck support is faring. Whether he manages to be open to a pass from his center. Whether he grinds as well as speeds.

I'm convinced his backchecking isn't going to be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Happy for ZAR to see some time up with Geno as well.

I don't think either starts in a top 6 role at season start though. You'll be looking at Hörnqvist and Hagelin.

cool, good to hear about Riikola.. but overall even if he performs well,he is probably still only no.8 in depth chart, after Dumoulin, Letang,
Maata, Schultz, Oleksiak, Johnson, Ruhwedel..

The whole team is broken up into four squads.

In the later session (teams 3 & 4), Cullen was centering Hornqvist and Simon.

Sullivan after:

Mike Sullivan said Riikola’s physical play in battle areas stood out to him today, he made a good first impression

Sullivan said it’s easier to move centers to wing than it is to move wings to center. Said someone like Blueger could play wing because of his two-way play.

Sullivan on Sprong: “Daniel just has to play his game ... to his credit, he’s made a concerted effort to get better in areas we’ve asked him to get better in”

Early talk is these may be the initial lines sully rolls with to start

Jake-Sid-Sprong
ZAR-Malkin-Kessel
Hags-Brassard-Hornqvist
Grant-Cullen-Rust

Early talk is also that when healthy, Sheahan is most likely to move to LW (where Grant is)

Not sure the logic of Cullen over Sheahan at Center.I think I would take the younger guy at a position that needs to cover more ground and has more defensive responsibility.

Exactly. Right Sheahan is a better player than Cullen.

How come Björkqvist and Lauzon aren't at main camp?

Björkqvist is still in college and I don't think he can attend camp without losing his eligibility. Lauzon has been hurt most of the last year, so I don't know whether he is healthy enough to be in camp.

Just read that Sully will be away from the team for a little while due to the passing of his dad George.

I remember seeing clips of him and his dad after they won the cup could see they were close.

Condolences to the Sullivan family.

Sheahan got injured on day 1 of training camp.

But when healthy they’re still apparently choosing Cullen over Sheahan at centre. That’s the point being made.

not what I was really expecting, I was expecting Cullen at LW and Sheahan at center(when healthy) although saw them as pretty interchangeable.

From what I'm reading, maybe Daniel-san actually is paying attention?

Great work as always, netwolf. Was out of town this weekend so relied heavily on your observations to keep me up to date. :D

I appreciate the twitter feed. Your camp write-ups were always one of the best parts of this board, but I understand if it got to be too much doing those, so I'll settle for the tweets.

Tough 1st period for Sprong. Coughed the puck up in the D zone a couple times, got caught with his head down in the neutral zone and got crushed then late in the period took a slashing penalty that led to a Sabres PP goal.
