Game 1: Washington Capitals pre-game talk

Postby FLPensFan on Wed Oct 03, 2018 11:21 am

Penguins were off yesterday, but have practice this morning.

Daniel Sprong is on the ice, full practice participant. Monday, he was a no-contact participant.

Brian Dumoulin has joined practice, wearing a gray no-contact jersey. Unless he sheds the gray for a regular at some point, I would have to suspect he is out for Game 1 versus the Capitals. It isn't unheard of, but rare for a player to come back from an injury and play without a full contact practice under their belt.

And......just like that, the Juuso Riikola opening night dream is likely gone. Dumo has switched to a normal practice jersey.

Practice lines:

Guentzel-Crosby-Hornqvist
Hagelin-Malkin-Kessel
Simon-Brassard-Rust
Cullen-Sheahan-Sprong

Dumoulin-Letang
Maatta-Johnson
Oleksiak-Schultz
Riikola-Ruhwedel

Would appear that Grant, Riikola, and Ruhwedel will be the likely scratches tonight.

Per PensInsideScoop, PP First unit: Letang, Kessel, Crosby, Malkin and Hornqvist. Second unit: Schultz, Johnson, Sprong, Brassard and Guentzel.

That 2nd unit needs to get some ice time too....could be pretty dangerous.

This team is really deep, especially with Riikola's immediate transition. The backup goalie spot is the only area where I am not 100% psyched about the lineup.

New year, new energy. The loss last year to the Caps burns. Use it.

Wilson gets 20 games. NHL DOPS finally gets something right.

Yep. 20 games includes 2 against the Pens. So of the 4, we only have to see the goon twice this season. Unless he is able to get himself another suspension.

So the next time he does it, and you know he will, that's a half season, right?

Will this deter him or is he just going to keep playing the same way?

I think if the Caps keep enabling him, he will. He's going the Raffi Torres path rather than the Matt Cooke path. Sad thing is, he's a really good player that just has a screw loose.

Yeah ! But $5 mil is a lot to shell out for a shrimp eater so here's hoping Sweaty Teddy stops the enabling crap and gets him to rethink that BS game style.

The Capitals are showing us tonight in this "pre-game" to tomorrow's tilt what we've known deep in our hearts all along.

he loses 1.4 million in salary for this suspension or something like that. I think the NHL enabled him, how many hits did he deliver that never got anything for or just got a slap on the wrist. minimum he should of gotten fined or warned. The NHL turned a blind eye and didn't want to slow down the caps playoff run.

I agree completely, he has no control over his cheapshots. As soon as he's back, they'll continue.
I do wonder if the league will step up the penalty next time.

I think the Capitals as a whole enabled him. There is a good summary on Twitter this morning of the Penguins approach to Matt Cooke, telling him he needs to change his game or risk not being with the organization, to the Capitals approach to Wilson, with teammates calling the suspension total garbage and standing behind how Wilson plays the game.

Let's see Wilson blow up somebody like Jay Beagle or another former Capital player. Maybe that will be the only thing that will change their apparently not quite working brains.
