I get that he is pretty decent at deflections, but cementing your feet in the high slot gives him almost zero chance to be in position to receive a pass. He's in a spot that usually your 6'6" goon would play.

He should be used more in a Kessel type role, on the LW boards, and allowed to drift to the slot as needed. Really looks like he has been told, when we gain possession of the puck on the PP, get to the slot and don't move.

That’s what he did well in WBS all last year

Which, glued in the slot, or playing a Kessel type role? I seem to recall him playing the Kessel spot, unless that was just a few random PPs I saw.

I thought it was more the Ovie roll except on the other side of the ice? Either way it wasn’t camped out in front of the net where he can’t get a wrister off

I don't think I saw Malkin on the ice after the SHG. Maybe Sully is showing some of that snarl we used to know and love?

Small sample size, but....

Sprong at even strength 2017-18

8 gp - 2 goals, 1 assist, 63.2 CF

Sprong 2018-19

Minimal minutes - < 2gp - 2 points.

Is this team struggling because of Daniel Sprong? Why not give him a chance to play more with talent until he gives you a reason not to? I don’t care about the pre season, it means nothing.

Bingo. They tried him with Crosby and Guentzel in training camp. He played mostly with our 6th, 7th, and 8th line centers in the preseason. Give him a decent look in games that actually matter.

What frustrates me most about how Sprong is being handled is he gets this matzah ball dumped on his lap last year when GMJR says the NHL spot is his. He did everything they asked - he went to WBS, he didn't mope, he put up big offensive numbers and focused on his two-way game. He comes into camp in great shape, gets the nod for Sid's wing, didn't play great in preseason games (which only matter it a couple players apparently), and is suddenly dumped into no man's land on the fifth line. It makes zero sense.

Yup, I agree. Sprong has a great shot and is talented offensively. He will thrive with more time and space and guys that create time and space are 87 and 71 and even 59. As much as many like Cullen and Sheahan, they aren't possession players, they don't make their linemates better. Sprong will find himself with the puck more and more space to flourish and get shots off if he's skating with Sid and Geno.

Pens will get one in the first ten minutes then play the last five like their hair's on fire as opposed to putting in 60 minutes of diligent play.

Gallagher’s goal - shot gets tipped right to him, wide open net.
Byron’s breakaway goal - no defender in site
Byron’s 2nd goal - nobody around him, open shot
Armia’s shorthanded goal - lacklustre defensive effort allowing a tip top shelf.

Some people on here - blame Murray. Wha?

I thought Simon looked decent against the Caps. Tonight, not so much. That's been his MO in my opinion, inconsistent, just like former Penguin Conor Sheary (who has both Sabres goals tonight, both on the PP). I'd try moving Rusty to LW, Sprong next to Brassard, and Simon to 4th line RW. But, you know, can't play Sprong much in the 3rd period, even when we are down 3 goals and Sprong is probably 75% more likely to score a goal than Simon.

Swap some of the puck luck and we could be up 3-2

So the forecheck isn't working, the neutral zone game isn't working, and the defensive zone game isn't producing turnovers? I know who I'm looking at.

Holtby had a good game and still let in 7 Thursday. Murray let in 4 and is also having a good game. Would be nice if the other 18 guys with him would do something to help.

Funny thing it would have been quicker to let him swap sticks instead of arguing with him.

Another giveaway leads to a goal. Oleksiak with the initial giveaway the led to losing a puck battle along the boards and the goal scored.

Intersting strategy by Oleksiak to keep his stick away from the post and puck until it was already in the net.
