Shaking up the stale Penguins: Trade has been made

Postby FLPensFan on Wed Nov 14, 2018 11:52 am

Rutherford has announced a trade has been made, but still pending trade call and league approval.

Bobby McKenzie says he gets the feeling this is another complicated deal from a salary cap and financial standpoint and is by now means a done deal.

My guess is it involves nobody I mentioned coming in from the original post for this thread. Gonna be a long hour or two....and of course, I have to board a plane in 40 minutes.

I stand corrected. Jason Mackey has said it is Tanner Pearson of the Kings who has been acquired. He has a 3.75m cap hit this year and next.

He might fit under the cap with Schultz's LTIR space without a major piece going out. My guess is Sprong and a pick.

It may be a pick and a future/junior player. Sprong, Maatta, Sheahan, Rust, and Guentzel are on the ice already.

WBS is playing right now and Taylor Haas reports nobody missing. Maybe something like a Bellerive or Pavlychev and a pick.

Fourth period is reporting Hagelin may be the piece going the other way. I'm fine with that if the case. Pearson is fast too and actually has 20 goal ability. That's what the Penguins needed, fast AND offense. Pearson not terrible defensively but a downgrade there.

I'm not very familiar with Pearson. Do you have an idea of what type of player he is and where he might fit with the Pens?

Not sure what anyone expects. Unless you move Kessel, Guentzel, Hornqvist or simliar, you aren't getting much back. This is a simple shakeup to see if it ignites the team, nothing more.

Anyone think Hags or Rust might be guy going?

UGH, Haggy was a defensive specialist who cranked it up in the playoffs.

GMJR, not sure I'm liking the direction your going bud. Cullen was easy, but JJ and now this?

Great deal by Rutherford. Hagelin lovers will be having fits about losing Hagelin.

Rutherford lowered cap by 250k, added another year of service, and got 4 years younger. Pearson is fast. Not Hagelin fast but he is fast. LA often tries to make him a top 6 scorer and he isn't. Hes more like Bruan Rust. Pearson had 20 goals and 24 assists for 44 points a few years ago, and is generally in that 30-45 point range for a 3rd liner.

Yes, hes had a slow start this year, but he has been pretty consistent. Seems like a guy needing a change of scenery. Cant complain about this deal as a start.

Hagelin is the perfect send a message type trade.....cant just skate really fast and play well defensively. Need production as well. Bryan Rust should take notice, as should Sheahan.

Correction, Pearson has this year plus 2 more years signed.

Minimal Cap savings. Might make things tight with the contracts coming up.

The Penguins:

1. Save Money
2. Get Younger
3. Get a player that produces more points than Hagelin at 5v5.

Great trade, IMO.

I think this is a good trade for GMJR. I’ve seen Pearson play quite a bit and he’s been a solid performer. I think he’s an upgrade to Hagelin at a lower cost and longer term.

Great post. Pearson has two more years after this, is only 26, has been a positive possession player his whole career, and is barely under 50% this year on a putrid Kings team. He has better offensive instincts than Hagelin for sure. Hagelin was an effective forechecker because of his speed but was an offensive black hole while being stapled to Geno's wing. I don't care that Pearson doesn't kill penalties, anyone can kill penalties with opportunity.

Pearson is a great buy-low guy right now because of the Kings horrible start.

Got enough? Really? Since coming here, Hagelin has 27 goals in roughly 200 regular season games. This while seeing plenty of ice time with Geno. He had a good playoff run but as FLPensfan stated, it's been crickets since. Not sure how Rutherford could have demanded more for a player of his ilk.
