Daniel Sprong hasn't been good. He might not ever be good. But he at least provides potential for offense. When you're in this situation and playing Derek Grant, the dusty old bones of Matt Cullen, and some guy that has 0 points in 40 NHL games over him ... I mean, come on.

Was that Adam Gretz? (I know I saw that tweet tonight)

Even worse.....somebody, couldn't make out the voice, pretty directly asked Sullivan after the game, with the injuries to Sid and Brassard not back, why no Daniel Sprong and what does Daniel Sprong have to do to get back into the lineup.

Sullivan cited that Sprong has played in games, he's played roughly 11-12 games out of their 17-18 games, so not sure where the notion comes from that he hasn't played. Sullivan then said the staff has discussions all the time, and they felt the team they dressed tonight gave them the best chance to win. :face:  :face:

I think Rutherford may have to have a heart to heart with Sullivan, and tell him when Brassard is back, I need 5 games of Sprong on the 3rd line or higher to see what we really have here. No 4th line duty, 3rd line or better.

Sullivan knows there’s a difference between dressing and playing?

Staal, Faulk, Zykov for Maatta, Sprong, Brassard, Sheahan and #1 pick. Carolina retains 1.25m of Staal contract per year. Carolina has 4 good RH D, and they’d get Maatta to balance that out. They’d get out from under Staal’s contract, Brassard’s and Sheahan’s after this season. Salary changing teams would be virtually a wash.

Stars:
Hörnqvist: two goals, one assist
Kessel: one goal, one assist
Malkin: two assists
Letang: one assist

Bags:
Rust: three shots on goal, did not score goals, floated and coasted on the ice
Guentzel: four shots on goal, did not score goals, floated and coasted on the ice
Sullivan: failed to coach the team to win, needs to learn how to coach and discipline to win games

Nonsense. We scratched Sprong. That should fix everything.

Maybe pick up someone really good at killing penalties so you don't give up goals on the first four kills. Oh, wait. We just traded that away.

Your best penalty killer is the goalie. Making clutch saves in pressure situations are key job elements for an NHL goalie.

Matt Murray has lost ALL of his last 5 starts allowing 19 goals in that span. The @penguins are 0-5 in those games. #Pens

I'm hoping Matt Murray continues to practice well and tweaks his game to be the goalie the penguins need.

I'm hoping that as well, but it looks like Murray is fading. Right now, DeSmith is my #1 and Jarry is only a phone call away from being #2.

This game was lost by stupid penalties.

Look at which Pens have the most penalty minutes. Malkin 30 minutes, Kessel 16 minutes and Hagelin 12 minutes. Those guys are supposed to contribute with offense and not with slashings, hookings or trippings.

Evgeni Malkin 17 GP 30 PIM
Jamie Oleksiak 15 19
Phil Kessel 17 16
Carl Hagelin 16 12
Kris Letang 16 10
Dominik Simon 17 6
Bryan Rust 17 6
Jack Johnson 17 6
Jake Guentzel 17 4
Brian Dumoulin 17 4
Olli Maatta 16 4
Derick Brassard 8 4
Juuso Riikola 8 4
Sidney Crosby 16 2
Patric Hornqvist 17 2
Matt Cullen 17 2
Garrett Wilson 4 2
Daniel Sprong 12 0
Justin Schultz 4 0
Riley Sheahan 17 0
Derek Grant 7 0
Zach Aston-Reese 4 0
Chad Ruhwedel 9 0
Tanner Pearson 1 0

Murray should ride the pine for the rest of the season. Dump him during the summer.

Not sure you can realistically blame Murray for any those goals. The hockey experts on this board will confirm that thought.

However, looking at the 45 goalies with stats this year, Murray has a save percentage of .883 which is 41st out of 45 and a goals against avg. of 3.90 , which is 44th out of 45.

Conversely, our backup goalie has a save percentage of .938, which is 2nd out of 45, and a goals against avg. of 2.04, which is 3rd out of 45 (Vezina candidate numbers). We are living in the bizarro hockey world.

The make up and style of this team as currently composed seems to fit better for the backup goalie. Either the coaching staff needs to fix the guys in front of Murray, or needs to fix the goalie situation.

Those are quite astounding stats.

I think you can put the fourth goal on Murray at least. Unscreened shot from the top of the circle.

Edit: I'd also say he should have had the first goal:
