There's no shame in losing every few games when you are playing well. Plenty of shame when you shoot yourself in the foot to lose every few games. The Penguins keep doing the latter. Can't beat a watered down Ottawa team, but then again, we are still dressing at least 3 pretty worthless players in Grant, Wilson, and Rust.

I may actually consider sitting Rust in favor of Dea at this point.

They have 54 games remaining, and need 60-66 more points to make the playoffs.

That results in having to win 2 games out of every 3, or getting 4 points out of every 3 games, the rest of the season.....going 6 or 7 wins every 10 games.

I was wondering that too, so I went back through the schedule, and they're 2-6 overall in OT/shootouts and 0-2 in shootouts. It seems like in past years, they won more often than not if the game went to OT, but certainly not the case this year.

Yeah, I can see it both ways. FLPensFan is right in the calculation of what it would normally take to make the playoffs, but it might be the case that the Metro this year is mediocre enough that winning just slightly more often than they are now would be enough to squeak in. It looks like they just have to be better than the Isles, Canes, Rangers, and Flyers. All of those teams have serious flaws, so it's unlikely that any of them are just going to start to tear it up in the 2nd half of the season.

Let's not be too hard on Geno, nor Letang for that matter, these bonehead plays are rookie mistakes. With more playing time and some experience, I am certain things will improve with these two guys. Let's be patient.

As long as none of them were involved in the play at all, that's generally considered OK. When the line change causes a very clear breakaway with no one else around, they have to call that on the Pens. With it being 3-on-3, the refs simply won't miss it, though if someone is next to a ref throwing an elbow to the head or taking out someone with a slewfoot, this crew will miss that.

At this stage, you can easily add the Pens to that group of teams.

When I have attended games, never understood why certain Pens players glide back to the bench on a line change. One of those things you notice live.

And you watch other players quickly make the change. Seems like an easy thing to do.

Sure you can compare against statistical averages, but that does not insure what qualifies this season. Fact... the Pens are not in playoff position right now. Fact... the Pens are exactly 1 point out of a playoff position right now. Fiction... the Pens *must* win 2 out of every 3 remaining games to make the playoffs, otherwise they're *doomed*. Maybe they do, maybe the don't, that is purely speculation at this point. Look, they are no more in an impossible playoff situation right now than they would be in a playoff lock situation if they were 2nd in the division with Columbus' 34 points (Pit 1 game in hand). They have to straighten out some things, and likely have to finish a bit stronger than they have played at this point. They do not need to accomplish a miracle, nor is making the playoffs even an unlikely proposition at this point. They can't take it for granted, and need to work for it a bit. That is really the long and short of it.

There are statistics available based on past seasons that give you a pretty good idea of what teams need to do in order to make the playoffs. No stat is 100%, so sure, saying they need to win 2 out of every 3 isn't an absolute must, but it is a pretty solid baseline.

They have 30 points right now and 54 games left to play. If you want better numbers, I can tell you there is almost a 0% chance that playing only 500 hockey the rest of the way will get them in. 27 more wins and 27 loses would put them at 84 points.

Since Sidney Crosby came into the league, only THREE teams have made the playoffs with less than 90 points: 15-16 Wild had 87 points, 09-10 Flyers & 09-10 Canadians both had 88 points.

Again, not impossible that, with a lot of teams struggling and tight standings, that it can't happen again this season. But, looking at the odds, the chances of teams making playoffs with less than 90 points is extremely low. It's only happened in 2 years out of 13....15% of the time.
