Conditional seventh-rounder is based on how many games Bjugstad plays next season, I believe.

are acquiring former Minnesota Mr. Hockey and Gopher Nick Bjugstad from the #penguins. Could be a conditional draft pick going the other way. Bjugstad is hungry entering final year of his deal, coming off back surgery, but healthy. Pens retaining chunk of salary/cap

I suppose on the bright side of Billy G pulling a fast one on Jimmy is that GMJR could possibly take salary back in a Murray deal now. Gives him more options.

Return is a conditional 7th round pick. Pure salary/space dump. Bjugstad entering final year of his deal and his $5.25 million real salary is more than his $4.1 million cap hit.

No mention of retaining salary here

The Penguins official press release on their site says the Penguins are retaining a portion of Bjugstad's salary.

People are going to roll over and die if Penguins move Bjugstad for a CONDITIONAL 7th PLUS RETENTION, and Jack Johnson brings back a 6th with no retention. Mark it down. It will happen.

I would expect this would change the ask in return for Murray.
Meaning we now have cap space to take a player back....

Why not, just retain his salary.... seems like what they do now. Flat cap, let’s keep dead salary on the books

Bjugstad to Minnesota is a gamble worth taking for Minnesota. I cant think of one team that benefits for adding JJ unless your goal is a lottery pick.

I'm going to take a guess that we retained 1M, to try and even out cap hit with actual owed salary.

Also, some are speculating that the Penguins are close to making a move now for a 3C or making a Murray trade. If Murray trade is coming, you would think this may rule out Minnesota as a Murray destination. Otherwise, they likely would have just waited and included Bjugstad in a bigger deal.

Everyone has their agendas. Lottery pick might be one for a team out there. So might getting to the cap floor. Ottawa has only 10 players signed, and is 20M under the CAP FLOOR.

Strange that they would retain on a 3C when they need a 3C. Unless more money is coming back than going out on the Murray trade.

Hmm...I'm not sure what to think. Some people on here have made a pretty good argument that the Pens are unlikely to do better than Bjugstad at 3C if Bjugstad is healthy. But if the Pens don't have much confidence in him being in the lineup regularly, dumping the salary makes sense, even if the Pens retain a bit. Clearing $3 million in cap space by moving an unreliable player isn't as good as clearing $4 million, but it's still better than having that unreliable player hang around and clearing nothing.

Max you can retain is 50%, with would be 2.05M for Bjugstad.

I've said my guess is 25%, 1.025M, because his cap hit was 4.1M, but his actual salary this year was 5.25M. Retaining 1M would even that out.

In a buyout, Penguins would have had 600K still against the cap, but then another 1.75M on the cap for the 21-22 season.

Here was a GMJR quote that Mike Russo of the Athletic put in his article:

“I’m happy we were able to send Nick to Minnesota,” Penguins GM Jim Rutherford told The Athletic’s Josh Yohe. “Just a great, great guy. Quality person. It’s where he’s from, it’s a great hockey market. I hope he thrives there. I’m convinced he has good hockey in him if he can stay healthy. He’s going to be 100 percent healthy next season.”

https://www.dkpittsburghsports.com/2020 ... a-wild-tlh

The Penguins on Friday traded forward Nick Bjugstad to the Wild in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2021 draft, Jim Rutherford announced.

Darren Dreger reported that the pick is a conditional seventh-round pick.

The Penguins are retaining a portion of Bjugstad's $4.1 million cap hit for the 2020-21 season, the last year remaining on Bjugstad's current contract. The exact percentage of salary retained is not yet known, but is believed to be in the area of 50 percent.

Rutherford still expects the trade to be a cap space-saving move.

“When you look at where the cap is today, we’re like a lot of teams," Rutherford told Dave Molinari of the trade. "We have to make some moves in order to be cap-compliant, so you look at different things and this is one of the players we had a chance to move. We’re happy we could move him to Minnesota. It’s his home. These are the kind of things that a number of teams are going to have to do.”

50%%??
