The Penguins have three weeks to finalize decisions about the entry draft, the free agent market opening, and which restricted free agents to tender offers. If Jim Rutherford can move one or two additional players to acquire a player for a positional need, increase cap space, and acquire draft picks for a deep talent pool, the Penguins could move in the right direction. If decisions should become complicated, the roster would need minimal impact from the Seattle Kracken's expansion draft in 2021.

Teams will be shopping for goaltenders this offseason. Desired free agent goaltenders could start their pricing at $5,000,000 per season. Unless another general manager makes Jim Rutherford an offer he cannot refuse for Matt Murray before free agency opens, a deal involving Murray could occur after the free agent market opens.

If a team in desperate need of a defenseman is unable to secure one after free agency opens, sell Jack Johnson for a combination of prospects and middle to low draft picks. Johnson's play and salary limits any roster player coming back to the Penguins.
