Because if he had lifted his stick, he had a decent chance to steal the puck with no one between him and Ward. At that point E.Staal would have had to take a penalty or make a really good defensive play.

Remember all the consternation last year about how Therrien had to try and install a new system midseason? Now imagine a team that has had Therrien's system beaten into it then having to learn yet another system.

It would take a collapse of epic proportions for Therrien to be let go at this point.

Watch how the Penguins defensmen just chase everybody around , just reaching in there with their sticks. Nobody taking the body, no toughness, no one on one battles being won.

Pens got outskated on that shift and also got caught chasing the puck too much. Ray Whitney was on fire coming into this game.

This is just unbearable to watch. They give up a 5 on 3 goal and basically quit! They had jump for the first 10 minutes of the game, then poof, gone.

Eric Staal has about 10 feet of reach on Talbot. He DID lift his stick! What happened? Staal had about 3 seconds to recover and he only needed .5 to lower his stick back down. Do you really beleive that little Maxim Talbot could lift his stick with so much authority that Eric Staal would not be able to recover? Staal knew exactly who was hounding him, and he knew that if he tried to go around him he would spring out the other side. Talbot was baited into hooking Staal and like an idiot he took the bait. He should have tried to tap the BUTT END of the stick like a veteren NHL penalty killer would have done. If it pops free go for it, otherwise skate to the bench and get a fresh killer on like you are supposed too.
