Onorato on DVE

Postby Stoosh on Tue Feb 28, 2006 9:33 am

Onorato is on DVE right now...I'll do the best I can with this...

Onorato said he will be at the hearing in April and he will demand that all applicants provide funding for a new arena.

Prisuta asked him if he meant funding in full for the arena, and Onorato gave an absolute, "Yes," as an answer. He went on the state in very plain terms that he will demand every slots license applicant include funding in full for a new arena. He said the state is giving us a golden opportunity to fund an arena will full gaming money and there's no reason whatsoever why this building should NOT be funded in full with gaming money.

He seemed to suggest that he will not endorse any plan that does NOT include full funding for an arena.

Was asked by Randy Baumann about O'Connor's comments regarding an NBA team, and Onorato didn't seem to really know much about them. He did say he couldn't understand why we'd want an NBA team to replace a team that we already have and could keep for the next 40 years.

Some other stuff about the campaign contributions and all that, but nothing we haven't heard before.

I must say, I was encouraged to hear the sense of urgency he took in discussing the IoC concept and demanding that the other two applicants include full arena funding in the same model as the IoC plan.

Thanks Stoosh. I think they are actually starting to use their heads in this situation. Of course it took them long enough and I don't trust a word, but if they keep digging in this area they may very well strike gold for everybody involved. Even if Hurray gets the license I dont care because the Pens will have a new arena.

I think after the initial furor over the Pens leaving, Onorato re-evaluated his position on this. Mainly because he will be up for re-election in a 1.5 years, right around the time the Pens would be leaving town if they don't have a new arena. That kind of attention (especially in this area with how sports teams are valued) can kill a politician's career. Look at what happened in Cleveland when the Browns left. Those people hated Art Modell, but they also took their anger out at the polls.

It was a good interview. I think Onorato is sincere about keeping the Pens here.

The person who worries me more than Rendell is O'Connor. He just seems to have smug remarks at everything related to this issue and doesn't seem to mind one way or another.

When the heat is on O'Connor, he doesn't respond well.

Agreed. The painful truth is O'Connor is not an intelligent human. In fact, he is slower than average. Slow people cannot think on their feet and therefore cannot handle even moderate pressure.

Hopefully, the citizenry of this great city will pull thier heads out of their bums long enough to elect a mayor with a 3 digit IQ next time.

DO is saying it has to be unamimous (7 of 7)

Sorry if I missed this before, but is this correct? Other threads on here say a majority??

Not from what I have read in the PG in the past. It has to be unanimous across party lines only, meaning the House appointees (2) and Senate Appointees (2) have to agree with at least one of the Gov. (3) appointees. So theoretically the vote could be 5 of 7, but not lower than that count. Make sense? This is confusing, because A LOT of people are saying it has to be 7 of 7.

I fixed it in your original message.

The trick is to right-click on links at the official board and then copy the link.

Did I not tell you that they were talking about this in a meeting here in Vegas & that Oronato was for this whole thing? Sorry I was never able to get the minutes of that meeting for you, but they were sure expecting to get this resolved in Pittsburgh & get on with the arena etc..

skullman80, I wish I could give you details but I can't. There was a meeting here in Vegas, more than one in fact, but the one was a committee meeting with Isle of Capri, Harrah's, one other casino group (I think the Coast group). Plus my husbands company Bombardier Transportation. The boys from Pittsburgh were looking into getting gambling started in the city & eventually having elevated public transit to link the north regions of the city to downtown. They had looked at the Maglev train & didn't want to go that way. Very expensive & not ideal for their purposes. So they were meeting with my husbands company to see whether the LRT would be better suited for their needs & part of that meeting was about the slots & how excited they were in getting this done. They had targeted a date & everything & weren't at all negative about any part of it! The only real issues were who was to get the contract & then how accessible the establishment(s) would be for people.

I almost had the minutes of the meeting, but my hubby doesn't work there now & the log of the meeting went back to Bombardier in Pittsburgh. :(

I'm assuming the not at all negative part was in regards to the Pens staying in Pittsburgh?

I totally agree. Did you notice the ghastly white color of his skin around the eye area where sunglasses would rest? That contrasted with his sickly red complextion makes him look like a freak show! Maybe he could stand in the vacant lot where Mellon Arena once stood and we could publicly flog him for hours and hours. I would pay $100 for front row seats and top of the line rotten cabbage and apples!

Where did he get that absurd tan? Did we honest hard working tax payers pay for that prolonged vacation in the sun while every business in and around Pittsburgh leaves because there is no political concern. OH I almost forgot...he is the "new guy"! Guess he needs a couple more vacations to get settled in. I never seen a 75 year old slacker before!

Thats funny. I used to work for Bombardier Transportation...my brother worked there for a while on the DFW and San Francisco contracts...never got to vegas though.

By the way....maglev has not been offically scrapped, the federal money still has not been awarded -- but it's supposed to be between baltimore and pittsburgh as the two sites competing for the funds. Bombardier's involvement in that deal is minimal as their expertise is not magnetic lev but supposedly they were and still are interested in building the guideway. LRT to the north shore is still in discussion but the costs are high with having to bore tunnels under the allegheny river.

We'll see. Even behind closed doors politicians are not to be trusted. Im sure they would work together to a point but there is no way Hurray is going to offer the city a new arena. Our politicians failed to get the process started before plans were even submitted.

That is perplexing to me. I heard all about their claims that you cant force this or that because it wouldnt bring enough "offers". That is about as short sighted and weak minded as any man, women, or child can act. THEY are the ones that will become BILLIONAIRES. Not the city. Forcing them to give back is what a great politician should be doing. Makes me wonder what other balls are being dropped by them right now? Uh...that did'nt sound right but I assure you it was a football reference. :D

I still am not an Onorato fan, but that interview sounded like he is getting on board, which can't be a bad thing. Having a cynical view of politicians, I get the feeling he is just covering his butt, but I could be wrong. :)
