Postby Letang Is The Truth on Wed Jan 26, 2011 12:41 pm

Congratulations to the machines! Kraftster and I would like to thank everyone for playing, we had a lot of fun modding this game and setting everything up. We wanted to do something differently with this game so we tried a new approach. Some of the RPs were placeholders and they had to be found or freed for certain things to occur; so in this aspect it was more of an RPG that certain people had choices about certain things. There were probably a few things we could have done differently (better), but we feel it was a pretty cool game from our perspective. And now for the roles:

Oracle - played by TWC and Malkamaniac

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of The Oracle in Matrix Wars. You are a program within the Matrix the has the power of foresight. You are the seer for the human resistance. You have the power to investigate one player each night. Your investigating powers will be important to help the resistance. You will also have the power to summon the living members of the resistance to share what you have found with them. You can summon the living members of the resistance one (1) time. You may find the members before you on other occasions as well.

As a program, you have the ability to change your appearance one time during the game. This power can be used at night or at any time during a day phase so long as it occurs before a final vote against you. When you change your appearance, you will become a plugged in member of the matrix and one of the plugged in members of the matrix will take your place as The Oracle.

One program you are trying locate is the Keymaker. The Keymaker is critical to aiding the success of the resistance. However, he is controlled by another program within in the Matrix and his actions may not be his own.

Spoiler:
TWC became plugged in on his own accord and we did a randomization of the plugged in villagers and mork won the lottery. props to mork for taking the role to heart lol :thumb:

Morpheus - played by Benny Fitz

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Morpheus in Matrix Wars. You are an unplugged human who is the leader of the human resistance. You have the role of liberator. Among the players are humans who are plugged into the matrix. Your goal is to free as many minds as you can. You have the power to attempt to liberate one player each night.

You have finally located the person you believe to be The One. slappybrown is a human who is plugged into the matrix. He is a computer programmer known as Thomas Anderson in the Matrix. You have the power to attempt to recruit Thomas Anderson beginning with night 2. He will be given the choice of choosing the blue pill (remain in the Matrix) or the red pill (be unplugged and learn the truth about the matrix). Recruiting The One will be critical to your efforts of freeing as many minds as possible and defeating the machines.

You are a strong believer in the prophecy from The Oracle. For the protection of everyone involved, you do not know the identity of The Oracle, however you have the power to visit The Oracle on one occasion during the game.

When you attempt to recruit Thomas Anderson at night and when you visit the oracle at night, you cannot liberate on that night.

You also know the identity of Trinity (beerman). Trinity is the angel. You are permitted to speak
with Trinity via PM.

Trinity - played by beerman

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Trinity in Matrix Wars. You are an unplugged human who is a focal point of the resistance. You are able to protect one player per night. You may (may not?) protect the same person on consecutive nights. Your love for The One is undeniable. In the instance that Thomas Anderson is liberated and becomes “The One”, you will protect him automatically. In the instance you are protecting another player and the auto-protection of The One is required, it will be at the expense of your life.

You also know the identity of Morpheus (Benny Fitz). Morpheus is the liberator. You are permitted to speak with Trinity via PM.

Thomas Anderson/Neo/The One - played by slappybrown

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Thomas Anderson in Matrix Wars. You are a computer programmer by day and a well-known hacker at night who goes by the alias, Neo. The past several years you have been searching for the answer to one question -- “What is the Matrix?” Your search has involved looking for the hacker known as Morpheus.

Spoiler:
Neo’s role had three phases:
plugged in phase, during which time he was protected by Morpheus if targeted
recruit phase, after being unplugged but before seeing the Oracle - no powers at this point, protected by Trinity
The One phase - after seeing Oracle first time, get kill every even night and can be trained by Tank on random nights. Could also stop sentinel armies

Seriph - played by redwill

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Seriph in Matrix Wars. You are a computer program that has the responsibility of protecting The Oracle. The Oracle plays a vital role in the assistance of human resistance to overthrow the machines. If The Oracle is killed at night, you will die in her stead. If you die in the place of The Oracle, The Oracle’s identity will be changed.

Tank - played by doublem

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Tank in Matrix Wars. You are one of the few humans born and raised in the human city of Zion. You are the pilot of the vessel known as The Nebuchadnezzar, which is captained by Morpheus. You also run the training programs for the crewmembers of the ship. If Morpheus is able to find The One, you will have an important role in training him.

For security reasons, you do not know the precise identity of your captain, Morpheus, or the other crew members.

Spoiler:
Tank could train on three nights random between 3 and 9. He got nights 4, 6, and 7.

On night one he could forego his future nights to use very powerful training programs. Doublem opted against this, so he could chose from the following list.

Angel ability (1 night)
Choose two players to become masons
Roleblock ability (1 night)
Liberate ability (1 time)
EMP (receive 1)
Divert all targets at Neo to someone else (1 night)
Direct all actions at one given player (1 night)
Silence 1 player 1 day phase (1 night)
Make someone unable to cast final vote (1 night)
Make the vote take one fewer vote for majority (1 day)
Role switch - choose 2 people to switch roles (1 day)

Niobe - played by Zarovich

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Niobe in Matrix Wars. You are the captain of the Logos, one of the fleet ships for the resistance. Your goal is to aid the resistance in the destruction of the machines. As a ship captain, your role is to protect your comrade Morpheus, captain of the Nebuchadnezzar and leader of the resistance. If an attempt is made to take Morpheus’ life during a night phase, you will die nobly in his place.

Agent Smith - played by count2infinity
eventually become Agent Smith

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Agent Smith in Matrix Wars. You are the alpha agent in the matrix. There has been a presence in the matrix of unplugged humans who are seeking to free the minds of those humans who are plugged in to the matrix. You are a program designed to patrol the matrix in an effort to kill any members of the human resistance.

You have the power to take on the form of any humans who are plugged into the matrix. Because of this, you are very hard to kill. If you are targeted during the day or the night, so long as plugged in players remain, one of the plugged in humans will die in your place.

You take direction from Deus Ex Machina. DEM is a figurehead of the machines. It will direct you to kill on many nights.

You know the identity of your fellow agents, Agent Brown (tfrizz) and Agent Jones (Bob Cole’s Senility), and you can communicate with them.

For security reasons, you cannot know the identity of Deus Ex Machina or any of the other programs in the Matrix.

Agent Brown - played by tfrizz

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Agent Brown in Matrix Wars. You are an agent within the matrix. You are a program patrolling the matrix for unplugged humans entering into the matrix to join the resistance. Your goal is to eliminate members of the resistance and take direction from Deus Ex Machina. If you are attacked at night, you will die and a plugged in villager will take over your role.

You know the idenity of your fellow agents, Agent Smith (count2infinity) and Agent Jones (Bob Cole’s Serenity); however, you MAY NOT communicate with them outside of the game thread.

For security reasons, you cannot know the identity of Deus Ex Machina or any of the other programs in the Matrix.

Agent Jones - played by Bob Cole’s Senility

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Agent Jones in Matrix Wars.

You know the identity of your fellow agents, Agent Smith (count2infinity) and Agent Brown (tfrizz); however, you MAY NOT communicate with them outside of the game thread.

For security reasons, you cannot know the identity of Deus Ex Machine or any of the other programs in the Matrix.

The Merovingian - played by ulf
Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of The Merovingian in Matrix Wars. You are a computer program within the Matrix. You hold the Keymaker captive. The unplugged humans involved with the resistance will be looking diligently for the Keymaker to defeat the machines. While the Keymaker is your prisoner, he must follow your voting patterns and will mirror your discussions in the game thread.

The Trainman - played by pittsports87

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of The Trainman in Matrix Wars. You are a computer program within the Matrix. You work for the Merovingian. An instance may arise where you have to do The Merovingian’s bidding.

Spoiler:
The first time Neo stopped the sentinel armies, he became captive of The Trainman. The Trainman had to be killed for Neo to be freed; however, The Trainman died before this happened so Neo was trapped in Limbo for one day.

The Keymaker - played by Troy Loney

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of the Keymaker in Matrix Wars. You are a computer program within the Matrix. You are able to craft keys to bypass certain boundaries within the matrix. In particular, you are able to grant access to The Source.

Your unique abilities prompted a program known as The Merovingian to kidnap you. The Merovingian is holding you captive. So long as you are the prisoner of the Merovingian, you must vote with the Merovingian, and your in-game discussion must mirror the posts of the Merovingian.

Spoiler:
The Merovingian had to die for The Keymaker to be able to lead Neo to the Source

Deus Ex Machina - played by bhaw

Spoiler:
Congratulations! You have received the role of Deus Ex Machina in Matrix Wars. You are the central system of the machine city. You will be able to control the agents, delegating a kill every odd night to them. Additionally, you have two sentinel armies that can be deployed to block the unplugged humans.

The agents you direct are: Agent Smith (count2infinity), Agent Brown (tfrizz), Agent Jones (Bob Cole’s Senility). You MAY NOT communicate with them outside of the game thread.

Plugged in villagers - played by mac5155, cup keeper, thehockeyguru, MWB, Hammertime, DocEmerick, columbia, relantel, Malkamaniac, Juice, shafnutz05, newarenanow

Spoiler:
These players were all plugged into the Matrix at the onset of the game. Morpheus had the option of liberating players as he saw fit. As players became unplugged, Kraftster and I randomized a list of minor RPs that each player could receive. This never happened although some of the minor RPs included Cipher who could betray the resistance, Link who could fill in for a deceased Tank training Neo, and Commander Lock who could block Morpheus if he saw fit.

I don't have the exact note about c2i going rogue so I will try to summarize everything that happened here: we gave him the chance one night to go rogue but the machines would be after him if he did. He declined. He offered again saying he was getting stronger and thats when he became Agent Smith. He was then able to act on his own kills and his goal was to eliminated everyone, including Neo. Once Neo spoke with the Keymaker and was taken to the Source he had to option of ending the Matrix now, killing everyone inside and he would survive. He could also go back and kill Smith. He chose the latter. Once this happened, the drills started within Zion. The machines were trying to get to Zion and kill everyone. As members became unplugged, they joined the resistance within Zion. If the machines reached Zion before Neo killed Smith, an unplugged villager would die each day to give Neo more time (this happened on the last night). Neo had the choice to use the help of the machines to find Smith and reach a truce between the machines and humans or go at it alone and attack Smith without the machines. The latter was chosen, which is why the machines continued to drill into Zion.

We mod killed BCS and Doc, it was the only thing we could do. Sorry it had to be like that but that's the way it had to be.

Regarding the killing of agents, we may have goofed on that. Rather than the agent dying and a plugged in villager becoming an agent we just deflected the kill to a plugged in villager.

We may have tried to script it too similar to the movies but I think it worked okay.

We are trying to fill in the night actions right now. Hopefully have that soon.

Oh, and one of the ideas we toyed about was having an actual architect, rather than Kraftster and I playing it, and the architect would control everything. We thought about making this kicksave if he would be interesting and he could delegate roles and some actions but we thought that could be a logistical nightmare (as if this wasn't one...)

If I could do one thing differently I would have had half the RPs work thru Kraftster and thru me. I think that would have helped the flow and made some things more manageable. People that have modded big games in the past how did you manage the actions?

I usually create a wiki page where I store all the actions and such. It's too hard to save all the PMs due to space. Also, I usually create PM drafts that contain all of the role PMs and such so that I don't have to save the actual PMs.

we made all the PMs in a google doc so we just copypasta'ed that but with the other PMs we probably should have drafted them somewhere lol

I'm back from my meeting. Just some thoughts before I finish compiling all of the night actions.

I am really happy with the way the balance in the game worked out. Theoretically, the bad guys had a ton of power because so many people started plugged into the matrix, so it would be a long time before any baddie could actually die. At the same time, the good RPs had lots of protection as well. In the end, I am absolutely thrilled that it came down to a Neo/Smith attack on one another on the final night of the game. I know we tried to script it somewhat, but truthfully it could have gone a lot of other directions and we didn't overly script it so that it would end that way. Really a lot of fun.

I think one of the best innovative ideas this game had was the way that the blues were used and the role of Morpheus as liberator was something new, but very workable. I was pretty impressed with some of the game design theories that were thrown out there that came close to nailing this aspect of the game.

The most controversial new idea was the sort of purposeless (end-game wise) "place holder" roles that some of the yellows had. I could sense a tone of discontent with some of the dead thread comments about "I didn't know what I was supposed to do." I think that's maybe perceived as negative because its different. In a sense, you were just along for the ride. Some of the game events were tied to your survival/death. You were just playing a role of staying alive (presuming you wanted to live over die) and being part of something bigger that, based upon the roll of the dice, you weren't an integral part of.

I was really impressed with c2i, benny, and bhaw in this game. I would probably say those were the co-MVPs. slappy played really well too given the weight of his role and the fact that the angel died so early.

Some of the moves that baffled me:
doublem role claiming. No heat whatsoever, there was just that cluster day where everyone was coming out and he seemed to join in for no reason whatsoever. He did live until the end so it ended up not being a big deal, and it may have made Benny use his liberation powers on others instead, so, in the end it played out okay, I just couldn't understand that move.

Malk taking the Oracle role to the extreme. He had a fresh start after being declared blue earlier. No heat whatsoever, but he came out and obviously claimed his role as soon as he got it. Again, in the end, this may have helped the village because it caused a lot to come out about the keymaker. But, his early death kept some information from the greens that they would have gotten had he still been alive, still the greens did a good job of piecing it together and using Troy properly.

Most baffling of all, and please tell me how this happened Malk, was Malk's calling for ps87 to be offed. Malk did not know who ps87 was. He probably knew who ulf was, however. I could not understand how he was pushing so hard for ps87. It blew my mind that he got the role exactly right and that happened to be the one and only night that ps87 was actually holding Neo captive. That day was insane.

This was a really fun game but a lot of work, haha. LITT and I poured over every word in write ups and PMs to try to keep it vague enough but also disclose enough to make it enjoyable and not over the top in the dark. Big thanks to LITT for doing this with me, we spent a lot of time on it, and I don't think it would have worked with anyone else, our thoughts seemed to mesh together pretty well.

They're playing the music, I guess that means they want me to get off the stage...

Was I just chillin as a yellow, or could I have turned bad? And what would've happened if I let troy die that day instead of saving him, for lack of a better word? You told me my goal was to survive with him so I told the village he was important...I probs would've lasted a while if I didn't come out.

you were just chillin as yellow, ulf. You were bad in that you were working against the resistance by keeping troy locked up, but you did not have any greater purpose other than surviving.

Your "goal", if any, was like you said -- stay alive with Troy. In the movie, Merv is a narcissistic guy who sort of sees the keymaker as a trophy, that's about the best we could make of a goal for you. The Merv/Keymaker dynamic was one of the things we were unsure of how it would work, but I think it played out okay.

Having Troy live was helpful for the village because, at the source, slappy was given significant information about the game design and was given his options for victory. He could have teamed with bhaw to kill Smith, but he only had one shot at it - he had to pick the right agent. If he did pick correctly, the game would have ended with a truce between yellow and green. Pick incorrectly and the machines would not help him again, so he'd have to go for the flawless victory (which the greens went after) -- kill Smith and the remaining yellows.

He could kill Smith on his own after there was no one left plugged into the matrix for him to clone, but with bhaw could have killed him at any time.

Neo could be killed by Smith, but he would be able to escape the first attack (which occurred the night Smith died).

Regular agents could not kill Neo.

Working with the machines would have also stopped the drills going to zion. Those drills and the sentinel army accompanying them would have killed one unplugged human per day, working up from blues to minor greens (Doublem - Tank), to Morpheus, to Neo eventually.

I was all for killing off yellows initially. The problem was, Troy said he was yellow, and others were saying he was important. That made me think that the yellows were split of good and bad.

And, realistically, bhaw could have been good in a way and led to one possible victory for greens/blues, so that did make it tough. bhaw did a great job of keeping any serious votes off, though.

I was really confused by you. The night after I voted for you I went back and reread your posts and started thinking you might be good. I know you made a couple references to there being more greens, and even mentioned Laurence Fishburne.... at that point I googled to see whether he was good or bad in the movie. It really would have helped to have seen the movies.

I figured that once the write up said the machines were drilling to zion (I didn't initiate that, as far as I know), I was dead the next day.

Oh, and the write up that said my sentinel army was attacking the resistance. That was the first one where I was like :face:, I'm boned.

I kept forgetting what character you claimed to be and never made a connection between the write-ups and you.
