The Nailers defeated the Johnstown Chiefs in a mutual season opener for both teams. Goal scorers for Wheeling were Kevin Croxton, Paul Bissonnette, Ned Havern, and Mark Letestu. David Brown recorded 43 saves for his first professional victory.
