Veilleux with the baby Pens...

Since the elimination of the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec League, the Pens were working on a tryout for Keven Veilleux with the WBS Penguins. It's now official, he'll be with the baby Pens for the playoffs. Good Luck Keven, you have to prove them that you're a better player than Angelo who?

How does Rimouski look for next season? They must be putting together a decent team since they are hosting the Memorial Cup.

He's on a tryout, i saw that on a french station (RDS) here in Montreal. Veilleux told the reporter that he don't plan to sign a professionnal contract for now, he's just on a tryout...for now.

I am a bit baffled that Moller wasn't taken with the 2nd rd pick (i thought he was going to be the first round pick, but i guess you can't pass on Espo at that time).

WBS opens playoffs tonight

The Penguins needed -- and got -- a lot of help from their minor-league team in Wilkes-Barre this season.

But sending so many players to the NHL didn't prevent the Baby Penguins from winning the East Division championship -- their second division title in the past three years -- and hitting the 100-point plateau for the third season in a row.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will begin its pursuit of the Calder Cup when its meets Hershey in Game 1 of the opening round tonight. Although the Baby Penguins have home-ice advantage in the series, Game 1 will be in Hershey because of a job fair at Wachovia Arena.

That's not much of a hurdle, though, compared to some the Baby Penguins cleared this season.

"It's a very, very difficult division," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "There's a lot to be said about the coaches and players there.

"They're a team that didn't score goals with ease. They had to work for it, they were disciplined, played well defensively and got good goaltending from two kids [John Curry and David Brown]."

Two Penguins prospects, Keven Veilleux and Luca Caputi, are expected to sign amateur tryout contracts and join the Baby Penguins for the postseason, but Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's emphasis will shift from developing talent for the parent team to doing everything possible to win when Game 1 starts.

"[Coaches] Todd [Richards] and Dan [Bylsma] are going to put a lineup on the ice in terms of who can win a hockey game, not in terms of "this guy is a draft pick, this guy isn't,' " Shero said. "I'm sure it will be a tough series with Hershey, but that's good for development, as well.

How would you describe him as a player? I have heard both good and bad about him but know very little about his game.

I know people that have watched him say he is basically a no show, but I can't wait for a chance to see him.

He's 18 years old so I'm not going to worry about those kinds of intangibles right now. Kids grow up. It's pretty obvious they drafted him for his size and skill combo despite the risk of his attitude, work ethic, etc. I'm more of a high risk, high reward type when it comes to drafts. When you go with the safe pick, those are the kinds of prospects you end up with, not the high end impact ones. Just look at the Pirates.

What is the deal with Veilleux's contract anyway? Is he allowed to play for WBS since it's a tryout, but then he has to go back to junior in the fall? I'm assuming he'd still either have to play with the big Pens or his junior team next season.

Thats what I'm assuming, I know nothing about tryout contracts.

Speaking too your article Jesse, that s why I have a lot more confidence in Caputi bein able to make a more significant impact down the road. He by all accounts is a bit more consistent and has improved significantly in his development each of the last three seasons. I also was with you in wanting Moller over Veilleux when we could have stolen him in the second round.
