Caputi signed to entry-level contract

Postby Admin on Wed Apr 23, 2008 10:49 am

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Luca Caputi to a three-year entry-level contract, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero .

Caputi was selected by the Penguins in the fourth round (111th overall) in the 2007 NHL Draft. He spent this season with Niagara of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and recorded 111 points (51 goals, 60 assists) in 66 games played to rank fourth in league scoring. Caputi ranked third overall in the OHL with 51 goals. He also played 10 playoff games scoring 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) before his club was eliminated in the second round of the OHL playoffs. Caputi registered a hat trick plus added an assist during Game Five in the series vs. Oshawa on April 11th.

Caputi was selected to the Eastern Conference team at the OHL All-Star Classic and recorded one assist in the contest. He has played four seasons in the OHL scoring 185 points (86 goals, 99 assists) in 214 games.

Caputi joined the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins last week prior to the club beginning the AHL Calder Cup playoffs. They play Game Four tonight in a best-of-seven series vs. the Hershey Bears in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs and currently lead the series 3-0. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton captured the East Division title with a 47-26-7 record (101 points).

I'd say the safe money is he follows Kennedy's path. He'll spend next year in WBS and start the following season there before he gets a mid-season call-up. Then again, if he really shines next year he might even get the call-up early. Then again, if his game doesn't translate to the AHL level, we may never see him.

He played on the 4th line.

He skated well, and almost scored on a deflection tip in front of the net.

Wasn't a stand out, but wasn't terrible

Looks like he had a pretty good game tonight... 1+1 and a +2 in a 7-3 Pens win. 8-)

I just got around to reading JB's blog about the game... I felt this warranted mentioning.

Speaking of prospects rising, a huge goal from Luca Caputi to make it 2-2. Great effort by the kid. Deflecting a Mark Letestu centering pass over Frederic Cassivi while sliding on his stomach down the slot? Can't teach that either.
