This is what I use for home music listening:

Really, really, BA when paired with an amp.

it's hard to say. the over-the-ear ones are better for airplanes/home, but suck for the gym and are kinda weird out in public. buds are the most versatile, but they fall out of my ear constantly - seriously, can't keep em' in. i reluctantly use bose buds most often.

i have this pair of seinheiser's that were awesome for the 50 bucks or so they cost. they were "medium on the ear" style and sounded better than any other headphone i've ever listened to. but i learned from my fiance (after 3 years of constant use) that when i'm listening to them, pretty much everyone around me can hear my ipod  so yeah, it's become a priority that no one else can hear them while they're on.

the drummer from my band had a pair of in ear monitors he used that he went to an audiologist to specially mold for his ear. those stayed in pretty well.

i prefer behind my neck. ive found clip on ones and buds arent tight enough on my ear.

Well sir, may I suggest the Sennheiser HD280 model. They block sound both in and out rather nicely, at the expensive of a tight fit. You wouldn't want to run or work out in these, but you can crank up music in your cubical without worrying.

buds for the gym/out in public, over the ear any other time. When I am playing a video game or listening to music, I want to be absolutely immersed. Side note: playing Doom III with over the ear headphones in a pitch black room = heart attack city.

Sennheiser flat out owns.

Grado makes some serious cans as well.

I use Westone UM2's for my band (isolation, bass response), and listening. when i'm just kinda goffing off, Sennheiser PX100's (cheap, light, foldable, sound amazing for the price around 30-35)

i hope to save up for a pair of HD-600's or better from Sennheiser, or a pair of really nice Grados.

I mainly listen with headphones at work, so I use these: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-J10-Head ... pd_sim_e_2

I've been using them for a few years and they work great for what I do.

I bought those yesterday...i've never used those ear plug ones before...i think i'll like them, they should be more comfortable than ear buds.

But generally i use ear buds when i'm stationary...even if i'm just walking around ear buds wont stay in my ear....for mobile use i use the earphones that fit behind your ear....perfect for the gym

Those are probably not going to block sound. They are open air headphones. The HD280's are closed-ear cans. The 595's are certainly better, but if sound isolation is a priority the HD280s are pretty nice. They are what I use at work. They do not require an amp from an iPod source either, which is a big plus. The bigger cans like the HD600s and my HD580s absolutely require a headphone amp to work with a source like an iPod.

If you want another option, these are more high-end than the 280s and also block out sound.

I own these for gaming and movies. However, they are also excellent with music. They also do not require an amp.

question about this...if i'm watching a movie with a Dolby 5.1 track, and I plus these into my AV receiver, will i hear a difference than if i was just listening to a basic stereo broadcast?

Yes definitely. They would not be as good as a true 5.1 setup, but they are way better than a 2.0 setup. (talking about movies and games)

so they'll recognize a 5.1 signal and process it accordingly/differently than a 2.0 signal?

Your AV receiver does that. Speakers/headphones don't contain that type of electronics. Most AV receivers have headphone jacks that will output a very nice positional sound from the 5.1 source.

i cannot see the jack tip on the page, but unless it's a digital rca or an optical i dont think that is possible. it would be more akin to watching a 2.0 movie in dolby pro logic/pro logic ii than it would dolby digital 5.1

The sole purpose of an AV receiver is to take the digital source and convert it to analog for the speakers or headphones. If you have 5.1 speakers, it converts the source exactly to the correct position specified in the digital signal. If you have a lesser amount of speakers, the AV receiver has to use some of its own "smarts" to figure out what to do. For example, if you are missing a center speaker, the AV receiver will take the sound that should be going to the center speaker and send it to both left and right.

The advantage of a headphone like the one I linked over just 2 speakers, is that the sound is at your ears, so the AV receiver can trick you into thinking sound is coming from behind, which is impossible to do if you have 2 speakers physically in front of you. The amount that this will sound realistic or good is entirely based on the quality of the receiver's headphone processing and the quality of the headphones you use. In my experience using my old Sony receiver and the headphones I linked above, it sounds pretty fantastic.
