Favorite oldies/classic rock music

Postby shafnutz05 on Tue Nov 03, 2009 4:00 pm

I know we already have a music thread, but since I haven't heard of 99% of any of the obscure groups that seem to be discussed most often on there, I thought I would start this one.

So who are your favorite oldies/classic rock groups/singers and what are some of your favorite songs?

I am a gigantic fan of any kind of Motown music....I could listen to the Temptations/Drifters/Supremes all day. Roy Orbison is the man as well.

I like a lot of british invasion music (zombies, moody blues) and like a lot of late 70s funk.

the best music to play when you're having a dinner party or an at home dinner date is crooners like sinatra and bennett. it just makes you seem like a connoisseur of some sort.

I'm a big fan of music before the 90's. I love me some oldies! Del Shannon, Del Vikings, Fleetwoods, thats the stuff! We had an awesome Sinatra impersonater (Pitts own Guy Matone) at my wedding, he was amazing. The velvet Fog (Mel Torme) plays at our house daily along with Frank, and Dino. Sirius Soul Town on Saturday afternoons is amazing, great stuff, there really isn't a type of music I don't like that came out before the 80's.

Classic rock is probably what I listen to most (Zappa, Uriah Heep, LZ, Clapton, Bonnie & Delaney, Moby Grabe, CSN etc.. , and I have an unhealthy obsession with 70's rock (Journey, Styx, REO, Edward $, Hall & Oates, Foreigner.)

I love discovering older bands, reading their bios and who influenced them and branching out from there, so this is a good thread to possibly learn some more, keep it comin

Can you imagine how these bands would be even more popular if there had been things like the internet, MTV, I-tunes, etc. during that time? It is a shame that we were not able to capture more live footage of many great concerts from those days.

Thats the 1 thing I miss most about these bands, it's hard to believe in 10 years a lot of these bands will be gone. I went crazy from age 15 - 25 and saw hundreds of concerts while they still toured and sounded decent. I think there is a lot of footage out there, but a lot of people probably don't have the $ to make them quality like LZ does today.

Classic Rock - Hmmmmm, I'll have to get back to that one.

I love Elton John with Bernie Taupin early years. Border Song, Levon, mad man across the water...
The Who!

I'm not huge rap/metal fan, but I can enjoy almost all music.

Also a huge Motown fan, but for the last several years I've been obsessed more with the girl groups. I may be the biggest Marvelettes (huge CD box is FINALLY out after all these years - so happy!) and Mary Wells fan on the planet. Love all the girl groups, pretty much. Chantels, Chiffons, Shirelles, Supremes, Ronettes, Angels, etc.. I really enjoy Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Love all the Motown stuff, in general, even the later 70's stuff when they moved closer to Disco. Love all the DOO-WOP. Yup, I'm a doo-wop fan.

I'm not going to post Classic Rock bands here because I think the usual Rock greats are a given, although I am getting more into the 70's Rock now... the lesser known groups. I've been into Metal since 1980, and I've really ignored the slightly earlier rock / very-early-heavy-metal material. At least most of it, because I've been into bands like Uriah Heep, but there is a ton of quality stuff I just missed. Now I see that was probably a mistake.

I think they are one of the most underrated bands of all time, Demons and Wizards is one of the best albums ever

I've been listening to Queens Night at the Opera album a lot lately, great stuff.

Seriously, 19 posts and not one mention of the Beatles?

The remastered CDs are excellent, especially the White Album. The original White Album CD was mixed so low it was hard hearing the details on a lot of the songs. Long, Long, Long sounds like a completely different song -- even better than it was before. I've heard most of the Beatles on vinyl, but never with a great turntable or audio setup...so I can't compare.

Yes, it is and it is when Rock was at the top of the game. I don't particularly like today's Rock. Or the 90's Rock. Or the late 80's Rock. But the 60's and 70's and early 80's even were excellent. The music had balls and it was original, inventive, and manly. It's been since commercialized like Pop. Mostly, at least. I'm sure there are some good groups somewhere in the underground. I don't pay much attention to that - I'm mostly about Metal. Troy Loney always posts groups that seem pretty respectable. But when you take a typical Rock band off the radio or TV right now, it just sounds like a pop band.

I've been listening to Queens Night at the Opera album a lot lately, great stuff.

For a long time, I ignored Queen. I guess because the singer was SO gay and it never occurred to me that a gay man can make music that kicks ass. Well, one day my friend gave me a lesson. Just played a whole lot of Queen to me. I was stunned at the quality of music, one, and two, I was surprised it wasn't gay at all. It was truly some of the best songwriting I heard. You sometimes hear people comment on the band's songs... they aren't kidding. It is great stuff.

You are so right. I never knew much other than their real popular stuff, but listening to songs like 'It's Late', 'The Hero', 'Tie Your Mother Down', 'Hammer to Fall', 'Keep Yourself Alive', wow. What an arena rock band. Brian May is one of the all time greats and a very underrated guitar player (and not a bad astrophysicist, also) And Freddie, while Fa-Laming, man that mofo could sing.

i love pretty much anything up to about 1995. i totally geek out over oldies, especially elvis. (we were convinced until about age 10 that my dad WAS elvis. except with white hair and he was thin.) my roommates are totally in awe of my ability to turn on 3ws and sing along to almost every song.
