i think stand by me is one of the best songs i've listened to.

It's very simple, not overdramatic. Not some epic ballad. Just lovely music, lovely lyrics and lovely presentation.

That is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Check this one out, you'll probably like it. 1962. I first found it on a Phil Spector box set.

Music used to be beautiful, passionate. People really trained how to sing. It's all changed now. I get my passion from metal, but that's mostly aggression. The opposite of it is in these old classics, which I can't get enough of. I first got into the Supremes in the early 90's, but I didn't follow up with the rest until 10 years later. Now I'm hooked.

Pink Floyd - their early stuff pre-DSOTM is pretty good and doesn't get a lot of radio play. Check out the Meddle and Obscured by Clouds albums for some really good songs. My favorite pre-DSOTM Floyd song is Childhood's End.

Other than that I listen to mostly classic rock. My favorite groups other than the Floyd are Led Zeppelin, The Who, the Beatles. I also really love southern rock. I could listen to the Allman Brothers, CCR, and Skynyrd all day.

They opened up for Eddie $ last year at Carnegie Library in Homestead, they were pretty good. I try and see Eddie $ at least once a year, always a hilarious good time! The man is a great entertainer.

So who are your favorite oldies/classic rock groups/singers and what are some of your favorite songs?

I am a gigantic fan of any kind of Motown music....I could listen to the Temptations/Drifters/Supremes all day. Roy Orbison is the man as well.

Great Thread. I was surprised to see oldies fans, especially 60's stuff. I was in junior high and high school in the early and mid-60's and loved Motown and other R&B groups as well as Brit groups and other new stuff that was coming along. My guess is that you also like the Four Tops and the Vandelas who may not have sold as much as the Temps and Supremes but may have been better in some ways. I think the lead singers, Martha Reeves and Levi Stubbs had the best voices of any Motown artists.
I liked the early 60's stuff that Marvin Gaye did for Motown. If you never heard the check out his singles Hitchike and Can I Get a Witness. He also teamed up with girl artists; his stuff with Tammi Terrel may have been the best music he ever did.
I'm sure that the Drifters weren't a Motown group. Carol King wrote most of their stuff and she was from NY. You could check out Carol King songs that she wrote for other groups if you like their music. On Broadway was one of the best songs ever made.

Fantastic song. Also liked their song What Time Is It. You might want to check out The Olympics who had some pretty good stuff out during the same time period as well as a little earlier, including Big Boy Pete and The Bounce.

Gene Pitney's another guy who wrote songs for other artists such as Rubber Ball for Bobby Vee and stuff for the Crystals who were a really great girl group.

We had an awesome Sinatra impersonater (Pitts own Guy Matone) at my wedding, he was amazing. The velvet Fog (Mel Torme) plays at our house daily along with Frank, and Dino. Sirius Soul Town on Saturday afternoons is amazing, great stuff, there really isn't a type of music I don't like that came out before the 80's.

Classic rock is probably what I listen to most (Zappa, Uriah Heep, LZ, Clapton, Bonnie & Delaney, Moby Grabe, CSN etc.. , and I have an unhealthy obsession with 70's rock (Journey, Styx, REO, Edward $, Hall & Oates, Foreigner.)

I love discovering older bands, reading their bios and who influenced them and branching out from there, so this is a good thread to possibly learn some more, keep it comin

Since you like Del Shannon and the others you mentioned you might want to check out Bobby Darin and the Everly Brothers who I'd throw in that category. I'm surprised any one ever heard of Moby Grape. You might also be a Quicksilver Messenger Service Fan.

Also a huge Motown fan, but for the last several years I've been obsessed more with the girl groups. I may be the biggest Marvelettes (huge CD box is FINALLY out after all these years - so happy!) and Mary Wells fan on the planet. Love all the girl groups, pretty much. Chantels, Chiffons, Shirelles, Supremes, Ronettes, Angels, etc.. I really enjoy Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Love all the Motown stuff, in general, even the later 70's stuff when they moved closer to Disco. Love all the DOO-WOP. Yup, I'm a doo-wop fan.

I'm not going to post Classic Rock bands here because I think the usual Rock greats are a given, although I am getting more into the 70's Rock now... the lesser known groups. I've been into Metal since 1980, and I've really ignored the slightly earlier rock / very-early-heavy-metal material. At least most of it, because I've been into bands like Uriah Heep, but there is a ton of quality stuff I just missed. Now I see that was probably a mistake.

I'd suggest checking out the Crystals if you've never heard their stuff. He's A Rebel, Da Doo Run Run and Uptown were great tunes. My favorite Mary Wells song was The One Who Really Loves You even though she had others that were bigger sellers. She may have also done songs with Marvin Gaye which other Motown women did( Tammi Terrel, Kim Weston). My favorite Miracles songs were You Really Got A Hold On Me, Going To A GoGo, and Shop Around.

You got that right about Quicksilver, and I'm a big fan of Bobby Darin and the Everly Bros. as well.

I love Moby Grape, been listening to them a lot lately, I actually got into them when I heard Robert Plant cover 8:05, so I say thank you to Percy.

Their first album is incredible, you know you got talent when you put out a debut album like that

Yup, I like the Crystals. Forgot to put them in there. I like Phil Spector's work in general. He may be a nut, but he made incredible music. Also, Darlene Love. One of my favorite singers of all time.

And the Blossoms (with Darlene). I got this 2-CD bootleg with about 50 Blossoms songs on it. Really, really, good, especially the later songs which are some of the best late 60's / early 70's music I heard.

I collect this stuff. I have multiple copies of many CDs since most are out of print and who knows when they'll be out again. Some bootlegs. Especially from the Ronettes, since I am totally obsessed with the group.

For you. :)

You don't rock out to that in your explorer. That's what Metal is for. You take your girlfriend in your lap, look her in the eyes, and start smoochin'. You gotta be able to open up your heart and be romantic, I guess.

I listen to a lot of "old" music (Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys, lots of 60s and 70s soul, blues, country, folk ...). I don't like the term "Oldies", though.

I didn't mind "Classic Rock" until songs that I remember hearing in the Top 40 became "Classic Rock."

They are not considered "oldies"....yet.

The thing I wonder is....what are going to be the "oldies" in 40 years? It's kind of pathetic if you think about it. Our "oldies" (sorry to overuse the term) are fantastic....Motown, Elvis, Beach Boys, Beatles, doowop...unbelievable talent and music. In 40 years, the oldies are going to be Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, and Jordin Sparks. Quite frankly, it's enough to make me vomit.

I will give someone $1,000 if today's Lady GaGa tunes have held up 40 years from now.

Course by then $1,000 will be like $50 today, but still.....
