It's very simple, not overdramatic. Not some epic ballad. Just lovely music, lovely lyrics and lovely presentation.

Pittsburgh has a band called Gene the Werewolf you should check out. Their cd came out a week or two ago and I cannot say enough nice things about it.

So who are your favorite oldies/classic rock groups/singers and what are some of your favorite songs?
I am a gigantic fan of any kind of Motown music....I could listen to the Temptations/Drifters/Supremes all day. Roy Orbison is the man as well.

That is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Check this one out, you'll probably like it. 1962. I first found it on a Phil Spector box set.
Music used to be beautiful, passionate. People really trained how to sing. It's all changed now. I get my passion from metal, but that's mostly aggression. The opposite of it is in these old classics, which I can't get enough of. I first got into the Supremes in the early 90's, but I didn't follow up with the rest until 10 years later. Now I'm hooked.

eddysnake wrote:I'm a big fan of music before the 90's. I love me some oldies! Del Shannon, Del Vikings, Fleetwoods, thats the stuff! We had an awesome Sinatra impersonater (Pitts own Guy Matone) at my wedding, he was amazing. The velvet Fog (Mel Torme) plays at our house daily along with Frank, and Dino. Sirius Soul Town on Saturday afternoons is amazing, great stuff, there really isn't a type of music I don't like that came out before the 80's.
Classic rock is probably what I listen to most (Zappa, Uriah Heep, LZ, Clapton, Bonnie & Delaney, Moby Grabe, CSN etc.. , and I have an unhealthy obsession with 70's rock (Journey, Styx, REO, Edward $, Hall & Oates, Foreigner.)
I love discovering older bands, reading their bios and who influenced them and branching out from there, so this is a good thread to possibly learn some more, keep it comin

Also a huge Motown fan, but for the last several years I've been obsessed more with the girl groups. I may be the biggest Marvelettes (huge CD box is FINALLY out after all these years - so happy!) and Mary Wells fan on the planet. Love all the girl groups, pretty much. Chantels, Chiffons, Shirelles, Supremes, Ronettes, Angels, etc.. I really enjoy Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Love all the Motown stuff, in general, even the later 70's stuff when they moved closer to Disco. Love all the DOO-WOP. Yup, I'm a doo-wop fan.
I'm not going to post Classic Rock bands here because I think the usual Rock greats are a given, although I am getting more into the 70's Rock now... the lesser known groups. I've been into Metal since 1980, and I've really ignored the slightly earlier rock / very-early-heavy-metal material. At least most of it, because I've been into bands like Uriah Heep, but there is a ton of quality stuff I just missed. Now I see that was probably a mistake.

Since you like Del Shannon and the others you mentioned you might want to check out Bobby Darin and the Everly Brothers who I'd throw in that category. I'm surprised any one ever heard of Moby Grape. You might also be a Quicksilver Messenger Service Fan.

They are not considered "oldies"....yet.

The thing I wonder is....what are going to be the "oldies" in 40 years? It's kind of pathetic if you think about it. Our "oldies" (sorry to overuse the term) are fantastic....Motown, Elvis, Beach Boys, Beatles, doowop...unbelievable talent and music. In 40 years, the oldies are going to be Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, and Jordin Sparks. Quite frankly, it's enough to make me vomit.
