Well, this game had story and some. There are actually wtf moments and quite a few decisions that are incredibly tough to deal with. While its not really a game rather than an interactive story I found myself enjoying it immensely. Unbelievably fun.
So is it like a "Choose Your Own Adventure" kind of deal?
assuming you're not too young to know what I'm talking about
It is. There are a few quick time moments to take on the walkers and other small things, but nothing ridiculous. Honestly anyone could play this game.
But it is also way more in depth than a choose your own adventure type. Some things you say or do will stick in characters' minds and they will bring things up later. A lot of quick decisions need to be made and those decisions can have a lasting impact on how things go later in the game. There is plenty of time to meet all the characters and with all this time you quickly develop feelings towards characters. Some I wish I had never met while others I liked associating with. The stories that take place within each episode are fantastically done and entirely enjoyable. You don't expect some of the things that happen and you are left at the end with a dumbfounded look.
And the best part, this has nothing to do with either the show or the comic book. It is based on these, but they are entirely different characters (except for a few, but they are minor at best) and you get to see the story of Georgia through new eyes.
If you like the comics or the show you will probably love this game. And for 25 bucks it definitely holds its own against any $60 game. I looked for story and got way more.
As for a better idea of how it plays, its like Heavy Rain or Indigo Prophesy

Edit: I recommend Heavy Rain as well. The Walking Dead is better, but if you have a PS3 I highly recommend Heavy Rain. These "interactive film" games are as entertaining for me as any FPS or Action game. You can essentially put a lot of hours into both games. But hopefully you enjoy cutscenes.
