Have you driven in Pittsburgh? 75% of the time the "open" lane is at a complete stop before you even see the "merge" sign.
Yeah, I'm picturing the merge at 28 north coming out of the city. The traffic actually backs up all the way to the Fort Pitt bridge because there are no long stretches of road.
I do agree if there is a ton of highway and the traffic is backuped prior to the merge signs and is somewhat flowing and people blow by in the "open" lane to just bypass it, it gets annoying. But there are a ton of roads where that zipper method is 100% necessary.
