From the pictures I've seen, if that cracked and indented windshield was indeed caused by his head hitting it, this was *far* from low-impact...

Windsheilds are designed to do that with minimal force.

Even still, I'm at my internship and the report we're getting is that it was relativley high speed. The lady came to a stop at the intersection and Ben hit her full speed. Now, obviously, full speed has yet to be defined, but I'd guess it was around 30 judging by the fact he had a green light at the 10th st bridge. Also, as I said, there aren't any skid marks at the scene. That's not good.

update: Ben's in surgery - they won't say for what but that he was alert and knew his current medical state.

Yes, that is pretty much what I just said.

Sorry, perhaps I read it wrong. No biggie. :D

Once again, I wouldn't consider anything that propels a man of Ben's size over the handlebars, as has been reported, and into the windshield and then carries him the rest of the way over the hood of said vehicle to be 'minimal force'.

Looking at WTAE's video of the damage, it's really not that bad. the broken windshield could have been damaged more by the force to the side of the car. It look like he colided right where the mirror is on the driver's side. It looks like it would be hard for his head to hit the windshield where it was broken since the angles don't look like the would match up.

EDITED TO ADD: I'm not saying Ben didn't hit the car hard. All I am pointing out is that cars today are built to crumple and break like this with minimal force because it's much safer when you are in an accident.

The PG and Trib won't load for me and WTAE has nothing new. Are most of you getting news from the radio?

From the Trib, Ben's injuries are as follows:

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition and in surgery this afternoon following a serious head injury this morning after his motorcycle collided with a car on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge, police said.

Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said.

I don't like the sound of that knee thing.

Well, I agree with Jim to a point. I hope he recovers, but it's tough to feel sorry for someone who does something so stupid.

I once saw a video of a 30 mph crash. the person in the back seat had no seatbelt and had such an impact that they killed the driver.

30 mph might be considered low impact, compared to Dany Heatly, but it can still kill you.

I was only posting what was being broadcast on the news reports during my lunch hour, and those were from reports coming from the hospital about an hour or so after it happened when details were still being put together.

So what I posted were the media's words, not mine, Scooter.
