I've wondered why Sony, kings of proprietary technologies (well they could rival Apple) never started putting SDDS into their receivers and onto their DVDs. They never tried to get it into the home.

I think the big issue for that was that it created 8 discrete audio channels - five 'stage', stereo surround, low freq effects (LFE). While I personally much preferred having more channels behind the image for smoother panning, only something like 5% or 6% of the films that had SDDS soundtracks actually made use of all eight audio channels; most were straight up 5.1 mixes, as the vast majority of theaters that installed SDDS decoders didn't go to the additional (and substantial) expense of adding more speakers behind the screens and more power amps in the backline. Sony stopped making new encoders and decoders about ten years ago.

The overall audio quality wasn't that good (5:1 compression, low bit rate) with SDDS, but the expansion of the soundstage with the two extra screen channels was pretty impressive. The only two 8-channel SDDS mixes I ever experienced were "Star Wars Episode I" and "Black Hawk Down", both extremely good examples of film sound in general. And both films were top notch presentations in world-class theaters.

I finally watched Gattaca for the first time. Wow...what a powerful, awesome movie. Loved absolutely everything about it.

I get what your saying and remember thinking the same thing, especially when Leo was all excited about entertaining him with the German speaking slave girl. I think the idea is just that Leo never would have accepted their visit if they weren't in the Mandingo business. Basically they needed the Mandingo angle to get their foot in the door.

Yeah, that's what King pretty much explains to Django beforehand -- he knows about him and he knows he wouldn't entertain them if that were their sole goal. Plus I don't think they ever planned on spending a dime there.

And also, gotta say, even though I thought it was a good, but not great movie, the bag scene seriously had me in stitches. So damn funny.

The 1st movie can never be topped imo.

The mystery of entering into a new world, like in JP1, is lost in any subsequent movies. Ultimately I think it's one of the big reason's JP was so good.

Not to mention every dinosaur will be totally CGI, and will look totally fake, unlike the animatronic dinosaur sequences in the original.

What? The majority of dinos were CGI in the first.

Shots containing just the Rex's head were animatronics. Every other shot was CGI. CGI in general has gotten MUCH worse in the sake of "realism" IMO.

yeah, i get that. iron man fights 2 evil iron men, cap fights an evil guy with the same powers, thor fights an evil asgardian, hulk fights an evil hulk... the mandarin looks a bit different in Iron Man 3, at least.
