I think the criticisms of his directing are valid. Clerks is by and large a film of one-liners. there really is no character development, plot per se, and its basically a collection of scenarios that kevin smith found humorous. the directorial choices that are really bad in that movie (guy smashing eggs on the glass, the oooooh navy seals dude, etc) are all really forced and takes away from the progression of the story. the set designs/cinematography in his later movies do the same stuff (mooby's being so clean, for example--like antiseptic in a fast food joint)

I agree he's not Steven Spielberg but his writing is mostly funny. He has good films and bad films. When he releases a film I wont go see it in theater. I wont take the risk. I will, however, redbox it and I'm never totally disappointed.

20 years ago today, we started shooting CLERKS.
20 years later, with no plan or provocation, I jumped out of bed at 4:20 this morning and started writing CLERKS III.
It's been like hanging out with old friends.
And after 2 hours of tapping the keys and giggling, I have come to a conclusion...
CLERKS III will be the best film I'll ever make.

As a gigantic Kevin Smith fan, this news pleases me.

Elias is probably one of my favorite characters in the View Askew universe. Besides Brody and Walt. I really can't say anything negative about KS. I adore all his movies and quote them regularly.
