I'll have to see a trailer before I decide to see it. It has potential to be either hysterical or outright terrible.

Re: Movie

That was the big shocking reveal though. The thing is, this actually could have been a good movie with a few tweaks.
-play up the ambiguity in the relationship between Megan and her mom. It's pretty blatantly stated that she's just a bad mom who blames her for her step dad being in jail. Take that out. Megan was damaged enough without it. Then you have the mother being overly protective because she sees that her daughter is on a dark path, and then she had a reason for being intrusive and overbearing.

-have more scenes of josh lurking in the background. That 1st scene with her in the woods was actually pretty well crafted.

-I'd like to see the ending scaled back a bit, but that's not really fair for this movie. that's the story it's telling. But it's cheap. Even if you want to say it's a warning about kids doing stupid crap online, you negate that with Amy. I think it's a more effective statement if you paint Megan as an even more reckless and out of control kid, and add a bit of subtlety with the mother genuinely caring about her and seeing she is getting into some dangerous territory and not knowing how to deal with it, but still acting out of concern. Maybe have Amy be a little less removed from Megan's wild ways. Not making her a slut or anything... Just have her maybe a little romanced by her lifestyle.

I get the message is don't do creepy stuff with creepy dudes or creepy things will happen. I get that. But by removing Amy and making her 100% innocent, I guess it makes for a more effective ending, but you're basically adding the second moral of "if your friend gets kidnapped, keep your mouth shut or you'll be buried alive in a barrel." It sort of breaks that first message of needing to watch what you do with strangers.

Anyway, I've dedicated way too much thought to this pile of garbage.

martyrs is amazing, but its only flaw is that it's actually kind of pointless in a big picture sense. so i won't begrudge this movie for not having an effective takeaway. i do think you're right about the pretentious "be careful on the internet" thing, though. from what you say, that doesn't reconcile with amy's story...unless the movie is saying, "be careful on the internet or else your friend is gonna get tortured, too".

Amy exists in the movie because if it focused on Megan, the message would have seemed like "oh, well she totally deserved it". Megan wasn't an innocent by any stretch of the imagination. Its easy to make things shocking by having the ultimate tortures happen to ultimate innocence.much trickier is showing that its still tragic if it happens to someone who isn't completely innocent.

This is the biggest flaw. Everyone who tried to protect Megan in this movie was either painted as having selfish motives, or tortured and killed.

As far as martyrs, it is ALLOWED to be pointless because it doesn't present itself as a cautionary tale. It also doesn't claim to be based on a true story.

From what I read about Megan is Missing says that its based on actual events from actual missing children cases. It doesn't sound like it actually presents itself as a retelling of a story. Of course I haven't seen the intro...or any of it. :pop:

the director has stated that it is a cautionary tale, and it is presented on the DVD with a video of a REAL father of an abducted child making a statement. it also says in the opening credits "Based on a true story". I just think it's pretty irresponsible at best, and exploitative at worst, to include all that

I realize that celebrities can have fairly massive egos, but this has to be some kind of record. Apparently Will Smith turned down the role of "Django" in "Django Unchained" because he wanted more of a central role in the film. Again, the movie is called "Django Unchained," and Will Smith felt that "Django" was not a big enough part.

Dude turned down Neo in The Matrix for Wild Wild West. If his reasoning was Salma Hayek > All, well then I can understand. His movies lately haven't exactly been stellar in general anyways.

Will Smith is the most scientifically engineered box office draw ever. There's a really good article Grantland did on it about a year ago that spells out just how scientific he is in selecting roles.

I just watched some of this on tv over the weekend, it's definitely one of those movies where you say 1. Roland Emmerich directed it and 2. you say "hey it's that guy from that one movie" a lot. From what I remember the fx were pretty good, no? And it had the terrible collaboration of puff daddy with Jimmy Page

"That guy from that one movie" is the French dude who looks a little like Ringo Starr.

Also, they got Smithers and Moe from The Simpsons.

The FX were meh, compared to other movies of that ilk (AKA Jurassic Park). The creature looks extremely fake during the night scenes.
