I'd guess its just posturing by Smith at this point. His star power has been dwindling and took a massive hit with After-Earth. He needs a hit movie that helps bring his popularity back. ID4-2 would do that.

It was worse than Live Free or Die Hard. Very little plot (less than previous), lots of explosions and gunfire. Set in Russia. Lots of subtitles.

Meh.

I HATED "I Am Legend". That stupid friggin ending completely destroyed the entire point of the story and meaning of the title. Screw you stupid test audience that didn't like the original ending.

kenny the kangaroo learned about the book ending after seeing the movie. typical hollywood move to take the easy way out and ignore a great ending

Wasn't even really the studios fault. The DVD alternate ending is the original ending for the movie and closer to the book ending. When WB went about doing their screen tests the ending tested horribly, which is pretty much a guarantee for bad word of mouth, which is bad for business. They really had no choice but to come up with the crap they tacked on for the movie's release.

From wiki:

Spoiler:
Several scenes were changed before the film's release, especially the stand-off between Neville and the infected in his laboratory. In the alternate ending, the alpha male makes a butterfly-shaped smear on the glass. Neville realizes that the alpha male is identifying the woman he was experimenting on by a butterfly tattoo, and that the alpha male wants her back. Neville puts his gun down and returns the infected woman. Neville and the alpha male then exchange stares; Neville apologizes to the Darkseekers; the alpha male acknowledges his apology, and the infected leave. Shocked by the ordeal, Neville sits down for a moment in his laboratory. Looking over the pictures of his numerous test subjects, the implications of his research methods begin to dawn on him. The final shot follows Neville, Anna, and Ethan as they drive away towards Vermont with the antidote.

According to visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs: "At that point, Neville's — and the audience's — assumptions about the nature of these creatures are shown to be incorrect. We see that they have actually retained some of their humanity. There is a very important moment between the alpha male and Neville."

Which is a wee bit closer to the much superior book ending:

Spoiler:
Neville goes to his prison window and sees the infected waiting for his execution. He now sees that the infected view him with the same hatred and fear that he once felt for the vampires; he realizes that he, a remnant of old humanity, is now a legend to the new race born of the infection. He recognises that their desire to kill him is not something he can condemn. As the pills take effect, he thinks: "[I am] a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend."

Bad Boys: awesome. funny and original production design for the time
ID4: very well done. started the disaster movie trend of the late 90s and holds up reasonably well
MIB: I didn't like it but it was a huge hit
Enemy of the State: well done and extremely influential action thriller for the digital age
Wild West West: yuck. shouldve taken the part as Neo in the Matrix (he turned it down)
Legend of Bagger Vance: ???
Ali: I thought he was great and it was a great film from Michael Mann too
MIB 2: Again I don't like these but it was another huge hit
Bad Boys 2: Guilty pleasure. The "Reggie" scene is so over the top.
I Robot: Not bad, not really good either. Definitely "of its time" (Minority Report, AI)
Hitch: Funny enough for guys to watch on a date
Pursuit of Happyness: Excellent. Equal parts funny and serious.
I Am Legend: Overall really good. As other said the ending could've been better
Hancock: I loved how it started. Thought it was really funny. Then it just got weird.
Seven Pounds: As depressing as the opening of Up.

After taking four years off from making movies, he comes back with
MIB3: A decade since the last one? Sequelitis
Django Unchained: Not a large enough role/his son couldn't be in it

After Earth: I think cynicism hit for a reasons: 1) it looks just like Oblivion (released a month earlier) and Elysium (due out in August). to me it looked like Avatar. Plus it didn't look funny which is what I like him doing best. Then the nepotism thing.

The original After Earth premise was basically the same thing, but taking place in Alaska in present day. I'd be a bit more interested in seeing it then.
