Eh, this presidency has been heavy on the celebrity influence from the beginning, so definitely not surprising. It's sad, but it's what it has come to.

Well, Bill Clinton had a lot of celebrity influence too. He and Hillary danced to Fleetwood Mac at one of the Balls, IIRC.

When there is a young-ish Democratic President, expect Hollywood/celebrity involvement. A Republican President, of any sort, gets you Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, and Nick Searcy.

Presidency has its advantages.

Case in point: George W. Bush assembled some of pop music's finest — including Ricky Martin, 98 Degrees, Jessica Simpson and Destiny's Child — in Washington, D.C., over the weekend to help mark his move into the White House. Country stars Lyle Lovett, Clint Black, Marcia Ball, Reckless Kelly, Asleep at the Wheel, Tanya Tucker, Mark Chesnutt, Lee Greenwood and appropriately Southern-fried rockers ZZ Top also contributed to the soundtrack for the nation's 54th inaugural.

I'm sure we'll see similar spectacles at every inauguration from here on out.

No offense, but the fact that you didn't mention the various dents put in Cruikshank over time, nor the Heller case, did make me wonder.

Cruikshank had a pithier passage on the topic at hand, so I used it instead. It was a matter of style.

I'm not saying that Heller is not the law of the land, because it is. I'm saying that it doesn't appear to be the landmark case on the 2nd Amendment and gun control that tifosi seems to be implying it is.

As tifosi said, Heller was indeed a landmark case, both on the question of gun laws and for other reasons. We basically have a new (or revived) individual constitutional right. It will take decades of future cases for the precise boundaries of that right to be established.
