How can a first grader be mature enough to identify as a different sex? I wanted to be a Ninja turtle in 1st grade.

I don't want to say it without actually hearing the whole background, but what if the parents pushed it on him/her, or raised him/her differently than normal kids (like that one Canadian family who didn't say whether their kid was a boy or girl, but just let him/her figure it out for his/herself)?


As an aside, I think it's awesome that the Colorado school attorney is named "Dude".

I actually agree with Scalia in that the law is antiquated and needs overturned. It's not fair to those states to hold them to a different standard than the vast majority of the country just because they happened to be "more racist" 50+ years ago.

Blue hair for one child, purple hair for two others. It's just a deviation from the norm, is all.

I think he is getting at the fact that they look like an obsessively "new age" family, so it's perfectly normal to them that a seven-year old child could have full-blown gender confusion and need to use a different bathroom. And I would say it's likely that they aggressively encouraged and even worked to convince her that her sexual identity was different in order to perpetuate it.

The kid will probably end up knocking up three different girls before he gets out of high school.

I just think these parents are setting this child up for an absolutely horrible childhood, and it's a true shame. When you are in first grade, you should be (as one commenter stated), "blissfully ignorant" of a lot of that stuff. And I honestly wonder what the parents mean when they state the child "expresses herself as a girl".

I know plenty of heterosexual men that played with dolls when they were younger (or engaged in other traditional female stuff), and I know plenty of heterosexual women that played with GI Joes or whatever else at the time. These parents just strike me as the obnoxious type that would pounce on anything like that and say "OUR YOUNG CHILD WITH MALE GENITALIA IS TRULY A WOMAN INSIDE, AND YOU BETTER RESPECT AND ACCOMMODATE HIS LIFESTYLE DAMMIT!"

Not to mention, they are the type of parents that would take even the most innocent of behaviors (like I listed above) and immediately start perpetuating to their child that he is different and should embrace his new-found gender identity.

You don't think making your 7 year old child the centerpiece of your personal fight for transgender equality is basically robbing that child of enjoying a relatively normal and happy upbringing? I can't speak to the other children, but I find their actions self-serving.
