Well, Obama is very different than Bush as far as what is important to me so I suppose it depends.

I’ve never really cared for the term “sheeple.” Recent events are forcing me to re-think that position.

Just because people don't agree with you on what is important to them, they are sheep? You are an outlier, deal with it.

Factorial, your opinion on recent events interests me greatly. You strike me as an establishment Democrat, whereas your colleague(s) strike me more as libertarian-leaning moderates. Either way, interesting.

Obama to authorize aid to Syrian Rebels:

The Obama administration could give the rebels a range of weapons, including small arms, assault rifles, shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenades and other anti-tank missiles. The opposition forces could operate most of that equipment without significant training.

Sigh. I expounded upon this last night, but I am tired of the narrative that REBELS = GOOD. Sure, Assad is a monster. But when your rebels are the sort of people that would behead a pair of teenagers for holding hands, why in the world are we supporting them? As a matter of fact, why are we supporting them, period?

After the West has armed the regime it's only fair that it is now arming the rebels as well.

The rebels are divided into many differing fractions from all over the political and religious spectrum. It's when the civil war is over that the real fun begins. It's also when the West will all of a sudden decide to let them sort it out among themselves and approve of any dictator that offers "stability".

Unfortunately "stability" in that region usually equates to theocracy

No, it equates to whoever poses the least threat to the West and their economic interests. That's why all these dictators have been in power in the first place. Mubarak, Gaddafi, Hussein, Assad, and so on and so on.

That was the old Middle East. The new Middle East will consist of radical theocracies because they will create the most "stability".

Point taken. Ironically, they could very well provide statbility if left alone, certainly more so than the old dictatorships. If these people want theocracies, fine, have fun with it. Let's not pretend that the West concerns itself with funny ideas like human rights or whatever in the region. Sadly, as long as there is oil, they will not be left alone.

The "West" as in citizenry or the "West" as in leadership?

There *is* a difference.

Yes, I do think that a radical theocracy with access to nuclear weapons could be a problem for "the west" but if we spent our time, money, and energy protecting us here AT HOME then maybe it wouldn't be much of a problem.

"I hope that we don't decide that our national security interests are going to be determined by a high-school dropout who had a whole series of both academic troubles and employment troubles," Rogers said.

Seriously? Lets turn the attention away from the program itself and tuen the nations attention to the messenger. :face:
