Went to Sichuan Gourmet in Squirrel Hill last week with my brother and sister-in-law. Great, authentic Sichuan food. All the stuff that is usually found at Chinese restaurants is still available here, but that part of the menu is called the "American" section. If you go for the real Sichuan food on the "Chinese" menu, be prepared to have your taste buds blasted. Sichuan dishes are spicy and use hot chiles like Paula Deen uses butter. I had cold noodles for an app (hot and spicy) and a main course of "sautéed dried eel." The eel was delicious. It's hard to describe, but it had a light tempura-like batter on it.

After eating there, we walked down Murray to the Pink Box Bakery, which is a Chinese-style bakery. Great stuff. I picked up some pork buns, sweet rolls, and pineapple rolls (what the Japanese would call melonpan). I've been looking forward to trying melonpan for al long time. You cover the top of a round roll's worth of bread dough with what is essentially sugar-cookie dough and then crosscut slashes. As the roll bakes, the bread underneath expands and separates the cookie dough into an outer coating that looks like the surface of a pineapple or melon (hence the names). Delicious. I have a hard time believing that the idea of putting a cookie on bread did not originate in the United States.

I went into Tavern 245 once a few years ago. The decor was fairly nice - probably on the level of something like Brgr or Urban Tap.

Other rooftops I can think of (though not many I'd go for a nice dinner):
-Brgr
-Marios Shadyside
-Steel Cactus (probably the new one on the South Side too)
-5801
-Carson City
-The Library

There's a couple making out in front Sichuan Gourmet on Google street view.
BTW, what's up with that Lucci's Pizza? It upsets my understanding of the Squirrel Hill universe, where there were only three pizza places on that side of Murray Avenue.

I don't think Lucci's was renowned for it's service...and come to think of it, all those squirrel hill pizza places have jerk employees. Mineo's has some like 16 year olds that are atleast nice to you. But Napolis, Aiello's and the old farts at mineos are all jerks to the customers.

Went to the Golden Pig in Cecil today. My brother raved about it but I had never been. It's the size of my kitchen...enough for a small counter and two high tops. The woman cooking was awesome. Funny, personable, and had some of the best Korean food I've ever eaten. I don't care for kimchi, but hers was excellent. Ramen was solid. The bulgogi was tasty. It had the perfect balance of spice and heat. 10/10 would recommend.

Their falafel is adequate, but the grilled chicken and baba ganoush pitas are pretty good.
