Each number in the math equation (13 x 12) corresponds to a line drawn, so 1 red line, 3 blue lines, 1 green? line, and 2 black lines (using white in my text here).
Then, circle where the first digits of both operands intersect (13 x 12). Then, circle where the first digit of the first operand and the second digit of the second operand intersect (13 x 12), AND where the second digit of the first operand and the first digit of the second operand intersect (13 x 12). Finally, circle where the second digits of both operands intersect (13 x 12).
Add up the intersecting lines in each circle, put the 3 numbers together and you have the result (156).

I'd rather just learn multiplication tables. Wowza

Work backwards... Like 97x 85... 7x5=35 carry the 3... 56+45+3=104 carry the 10 72+10= 8245...
